Thought I'd give Rob some exposure since his brother gets all the press. As you know, Rob has been confirmed as the new defensive coordinator in Dallas. He'll have to get to work right away repairing some glaring weaknesses in the secondary. What are the chances he could lure Nnamdi Asomugha, one of the top corners in the league, to Dallas? After all, he coached him for 4 years at Oakland, and Nnamdi recently said that he'd resign in Oakland if Ryan returned there. Or what about free agent Champ Bailey who will likely not be returning to Denver? Why let another team grab these guys?

A shut-down corner that nobody throws to? e.g. Nnamdi Asomugha
Or, a very good corner who gets opportunities to pad their stats? e.g. Asante Samuel

Verdict: Padding stats sounds great, but I'd rather be feared by all QBs and WRs, while earning mucho dinero.

*[Note: This contract was recently voided due to Nnamdi not reaching performance incentives. But really, what do you want? The guy was only targeted 27x all year, allowing 13 completions. Yes, I said 'all year'].

Divisional Round Predictions: Find below my original predictions made Saturday mid-afternoon...with additional commentary in red...not bad...off in few places but overall pretty close. You be the judge:

Steelers/ Ravens:

- Rice has been sporadic
- Flacco should net 220-240yds and a touch
- Roethlisberger plays too good under pressure...will frustrate Suggs
-Mendenhall will move the chains and pound it in from the 1...
-Steelers ride the home-field advantage and win a close one

**Rice was sporadic...I gave Flacco too much credit for yds, but he did net a touch...Suggs did the frustrating most of the time...Mendenhall made 2 house calls...

Packers/Falcons:

- Rodgers will throw for 320-350yds and 2 - 3 touches
- Pack will stack the line and limit the Burner
- Matthews will try, but won't get to Ryan
- Falcons will max protect and look for opportunities underneath...could be Michael Jenkins' 15 mins of fame
- Falcons 20-2 at home with Ryan under center
- Will be 20-3 after today
- Pack will win the highest scoring game of the weekend

***Rodgers nets 366, 3 house calls, and a door knocker...Burner limited to 39yds...Clay proved me wrong and got 2 sacks...Jenkins gets his 2nd highest recpt total for a game all season...

Bears/Seahawks:

- Yes, the Seahawks won their earlier match-up
- Yes, they sacked Cutler way too many times
- and yes, they are smokin hot right now after a monster win over the Saints
- But the party ends now.
- The Seahawks D will show up, but I like the Bears D to dominate behind Pepper
- Bears advance and will host the Pack next week

***Seahawks D did not show up...and Bears dominated offensively as well

Patriots/Jets:

-Listen closely.
- Rex Ryan and the Jets are annoying.
- It doesn't sound like confidence to me..more like fear...a wounded animal with its back against the wall
- But aren't those the most dangerous?
- Don't expect a 45-3 repeat of their last contest...the Jets will be tough
- And despite his denials, Cromartie has ticked off Brady
- He won't shy away from trying to make Cromartie pay...and maybe Ryan knows it and has something up his sleeve
- Someone is going to make a lot of cash$$$ if the Jets win...but it won't be me.
- I don't have the balls to bet against Brady
- Patriots by 4

**The Jets fought like wounded animals...Ryan's pre-game psychological antics paid off...should've have followed my gut and made some cash...

Touch Football Update

The Bear Obsessions won their first game of the new winter season over the Gunners with solid play on both sides of the ball. Then took care of the young Orange Krush as the defense took over the game. Now 2-1, let's see if the Bears go deep this year.

Final Notes:

- Credit Pete Carroll for being proactive in trying to improve this Seahawks team. The acquisition of Charlie Whitehurst was not seen as a great move, but hey- he led the team to a crucial Week 17 win over the Rams to get into the playoffs. Traded away Deion Branch who was impactful for the Patriots over the 2nd round of the season- yet disappeared during the playoffs. Knowing Forsett wouldn't be a 20 touch per game RB, he trades for a bitter Marshawn Lynch with something to prove. Lynch has the biggest game of his life against the Saints. Questionable move to fire his OC Bates after a monster win over the Saints and a near come-back against the Bears but he made the decision citing philosophical differences. Adds Tom Cable to his staff coaching the O-line (word is white undershirts will now be banned from team facilities). You have to trust this guy knows what he's doing. Guess we'll see.

- Why is it news that Tony Romo is healthy and ready to play? Who cares? The Boys didn't even catch a sniff of the playoffs this year. Why am I even writing about this?

The NFL would prefer if the Eagles advanced but it's no guarantee. The Packers will be ready. But can't you imagine an Eagles/ Falcons NFC Championship in Atlanta? WOW

1. Help me understand you Commissioner Goodell. You are the product of privileged upbringing as the son of a former United States Senator. You join the NFL as an administrative intern and for many years worked very closely with both Pete Rozelle and Paul Tagliabue. Since your appointment to the top job, you've instituted a newer, stricter player conduct policy. You've presided over many judgements (Pacman Jones, Tank Johnson, Chris Henry, Big Ben, Donte Stallworth, and of course Michael Vick), each time putting your stamp on the 'sentence' and bringing the NFL to a new level of respectability. But help me understand you sir. Because I cannot explain what happened in the case of Brett Favre (or Sean Payton). It is so clearly a case of favouritism, it boggles the mind. Whereas previous judgements were swift and exacting, this was slow, onerous, and wrong. In one fell swoop you've lost a lot of the credibility you'd built up. You succeeded in protecting the NFL's current golden boy, effectively allowing him to ride off into the sunset with a mere slap on the wrist (a wink and a pat on the butt no doubt)- reputation intact. But you failed to be fair (and I don't buy the fact that you couldn't prove it). Let me ask you- if it were Terrell Owens accused of sending x-rated text messages and lewd photos of his ding-a-ling would you have been so kind?

2. You pretty much know you're a good coach if you can hold down a job for more than 3 years. Things are usually crazy the week after the season ends, but is it just me or are things a little bit weirder this time around?

- Marvin Lewis re-signs in Cincinnati: What? This is a clearly disfunctional relationship and Lewis couldn't stop his team from giving up mid-year. They don't plan on resigning their best receiver. Cedric Benson seems to have been a one season wonder. What can possibly change next year?

- Jason Garrett has earned the job in Dallas. But gosh, couldn't you have seen Jeff Fisher in this job? Jerry Jones was not able to pry him away from Tennessee after Bill Parcells departed (he asked for permission to discuss the job with Fisher and was flatly denied). *With the Titans announcing that VY will no longer be their QB, it would appear that they've chosen Fisher's side and will be retaining him as coach.

- The 49ers will be ready to announce a new head coach by Friday? Expect it to be Harbaugh. He'd get to stay on the West Coast and take over a team that has a lot of talent in a weak division.

- Rob Ryan is apparently a top candidate for the Carolina job. Now why wouldn't he be a top choice for Holmgren right there in Cleveland, now that he's fired Mangini? Hmmmm.

- Cowher was rumoured to land in Miami now (and not Carolina where he lives). But we know that won't be happening now with the Fins deciding to retain Sparano.

- I'm not that surprised Kubiak was retained in Houston. He produced a talented offence and is well liked by the players. All he needed was a really good defensive mind and he's got that in Wade Philips. Expect a tougher team next year if Koobs allowed Wade to install a 3-4.

- If both Singletary (LBs Coach) and McDaniels (OC) both land in Minnesota, expect the Vikings to be a QB away from challenging for the division once again, this time under Leslie Frazier. Both were not great Head Coaches, but are proven coordinators.

- Tom Cable gets fired? What?! He was only 6-0 in the division which for Al Davis is equivalent to winning the Super Bowl. What the hell?

New OT Rules

Anyone looking forward to the new OT rules as much as I am? I find this the most interesting part "...trying an onside kick to begin overtime, a foolhardy move under the old system, but more likely now. Why? Because the team attempting the kick has given the opposition a chance to possess when it kicks off. If the kicking team grabs the onside kick, then marches down and makes a field goal: Victory".

Playoff Predictions

- Colts over the Jets in a close game

- Ravens over the Chiefs. This game will be closer than people think.

- Eagles over the Packers. Yeah, I said it. Aaron Rodgers will throw for a bundle, but I think Reid will have the better game plan.

- Saints and Seahawks. The only foreseeable upset here will be some fan's upset stomach after eating 2 steaks, a rack of ribs, chicken, cookies, and washing it all down with a keg of beer. Saints in a rout. Even without a running game.

The winter indoor season is here and The Obsessions, started it off as they usually do- with a loss. Good team though...just some Christmas rust that needs shaking off. This team will make the finals.

Toronto the Beautiful NFL city

We would love to be able to say that wouldn't we? The fact is we can't....and maybe won't ever.

The dream of having an NFL team in Toronto seemed to become ‘real’, when Rogers Communications Inc came to an agreement with Ralph Wilson, Owner Buffalo Bills, to acquire 8 games over a period of 5 years. The hope was that due to a number of factors (Ralph Wilson’s age, The City of Buffalo’s economy, the team’s financial viability, etc.), the team would eventually migrate north permanently.

3 and 5 year ticket packages were not cheap, but people were willing to pay with the expectation that they could be first in line to acquire Season’s Seats should the team ever come to Toronto.

Yet 3 years later, amid the perception that Rogers may have made a bad deal, the unfortunate death of the Company’s patriarch Ted, the Blue Jays dismal existence, and the Company’s renewed efforts towards cost efficiency the dream may be over.

But do the rumours of Rogers interest in acquiring a stake in MLSE (a deal that would include the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Toronto Raptors, and the Air Canada Centre) bring hope that does at least want to remain involved in the NFL?

Let's put it this way, when Rhino Spiel met with someone inside Rogers close to the situation, the topic was too sensitive to discuss at length. Even off the record.

- Is the dream over?
- Any chance the deal could be extended?
- Would Rogers consider a partial ownership stake in the Buffalo Bills?

So there could be something here...or nothing at all. But for now, these questions will remain unanswered.

Favre's streak snapped

I know...297 consecutive starts...but enough already.

Yes, he's the NFL's 'Iron-Man'. Yes, he's had a hall-of-fame career (which begs the question: will he go into the Hall as a Packer or Viking?). Yes, he is one of the greatest players of all time.

But I'm a little tired of the Favre, and what he's gotten away with...

- 1996 Favre enters a substance abuse problem with an addiction to Vicodin (a Narcotic Analgesic...you know, the one Saints Head Coach Sean Payton was/is addicted to*) and to also be treated for Alcohol Abuse.

- Turned down $20M by the Packers to effectively stay home...instead opted to play for the Jets. Who does that?

- Jenn Sterger sex scandal: Why is the NFL dragging their feet on this one? Clearly they do not want to have to punish Favre.

- Don't forget about the other woman (Jets Massage Therapist) who came forward claiming that Brett harassed her during the Jets' 2008 Training Camp...she claimed he sent her racy texts and voice mails claiming 'bad intentions'.

If these things were on Terrell Owens' resume, would he receive the same treatment Brett has?

- Brett just strikes me as a selfish guy. I know it's hard to leave the game you love. But stop saying you're calling it quits, only to allow yourself to get dragged back for one more season. No doubt it's over now as this year has been a joke (both on and off the field). But everyone still pays homage to this guy like he's the be all and end all.

- Listen, he was a great player in his prime no doubt. But the NFL and the Media do not consistently separate the player from the man i.e. professional vs. personal life. So...why should you?

*[Why did the NFL sweep this Coach Payton's addiction under the rug? Even in the face of irrefutable evidence? Could it be because the NFL did not want to have to discipline an elite coach just coming off a Super Bowl victory?].

I dunno...I think it's kinda weak. Is it just me?

Bowe Knows

Dwayne Bowe has always been a good receiver. But this year, he's not only given life to the Chief's passing game, he may have also risen his game to elite status. Check it out:

- 2007 stats: 16 games, 70 recpts, 995 yds, 5 TDs

- 2008 stats: 16 games, 76 recpts, 1002 yds, 7 TDs

- 2009 stats: 11 games, 47 recpts, 589 yds, 4 TDs

- 2010 stats to date: 11 games, 58 recpts, 885 yds, 14 TDs

Through his first 4 games this year Bowe totalled 9 recpts, 152 yds, and 1 TD. Hardly deserving of elite status. But then something clicked and over the next 7 games Bowe has totalled 49 recpts, 733 yds, and 13 TDs...in only 2 games over that span did he score less than 2 TDs. Incredible numbers. Even more incredible considering that Matt Cassell would never be mistaken for Peyton Manning.

Cowboys Win!

A few of us went down to Dallas for last week's Thanksgiving game. We were hopeful for a Cowboys win but expected a loss at the hand of the Saints. Personally, I saw a 10-17 halftime score with the Saints winning 17-27 as the final...never really being in any danger. What we saw was a completely different game that the Cowboys were a Roy Williams fumble away from winning.

The big question after that game was whether Jason Garrett helped or hindered his chances of winning the coaching job in the loss.

Hindered: Dumb play calling and an inability to recognize mismatches created by New Orlean's passing schemes leads to a 0-17 start and ultimately the loss. Terence Newman lets Robert Meacham run right past him for a 55 yard gain? Roy Williams ignores the rules of basic ball security? Marion Barber consistently runs in between the tackles for a 1 yard gain on 1st and 10? Wow.

Helped: The defence steps up and the Cowboys don't roll over coming back from 0-17 to take the lead 27-23 with 4 minutes to play. If not for a lapse in ball security, the Cowboys win a shocker.

Even though they didn't beat the Saints, I think the Cowboys still won. They've won back their pride. That can only help Jason Garrett's chances of being the coach in 2011.

Cortland Fine-Again

Ok, so everyone knows that mild-mannered Andre Johnson beat the stuffing out of that scorch Cortland Fine-Again on Sunday. Well known as a dirty player, most of the fans (not to mention most NFL WRs) felt that the Cortland's thumping was warranted.

- September 2010 fined $5,000 for throwing NYG WR Steve Smith to the ground by his helmet.

- October 2010 fined $10,000 for unnecessary roughness after hitting a helmet less Denver Broncos guard Chris Kuper.

These are but 2 of Cortland's fines this year alone. "Did I want it to escalate into that? Absolutely not," Finnegan said Monday on a Nashville radio show.

What did he think would happen when he yelled "Watch this" at the Texans sideline before proceeding to set things off by jabbing Andre in the neck and face mask? Damn right he wanted something to happen, he purposely wanted to push Andre over the edge.

And he still doesn't get it: "This is not hockey this is the NFL," Finnegan said Monday. "It's crazy to me to see people condoning this like I got what I deserved."

Exactly what did you deserve Fine-Again?

Touch Football Update

The Canes finished the regular season as the number two seed with a 7-1-2 record. After demolishing the Mudrunners in their first playoff game, the Canes went on to face number one seed Brick in the Division Final.

Down 0-26 at the half, the Canes did not fall apart proclaiming a new half and promising the comeback of the year. Owing much to their Championship pedigree, the Canes mounted a furious rally but unfortunately fell short losing by a final score of 24-37. Although the Canes would not repeat as Division Champs, they've proved themselves as the best team over the last two years with a 17-1-2 regular season record with a Division Title. Congratulations Hurricanes!

Bear Obsessions- Stunk last night (the score is not worth mentioning). No other way to put it. Currently 4-2 but played like they were 2-4. Have to do better than that man.

Newsflash!

Pittsburgh Steeler James Harrison has been fined yet again by the league. I have to believe he just doesn't care about the NFL's edict. When will they start doling out suspensions? And are we dedicating this money to the poor? Sounds like a good idea to me.

V for Vendetta

- Words cannot properly articulate Michael Vick's performance Monday night against the Redskins. So we won't even try. But what a statement this makes against the NFL and how only 1 team wanted to give him a chance. Andy Reid took a gamble, and now it's paying dividends. Let's look ahead to what could be the biggest game in Week 11: New Giants at Philadelphia.

- In the two full games before he was injured, Vick was 38/65 for 575 yds, and 5 PaTDs. The opponents? Detroit and Jacksonville- 17th and 29th against the pass respectively. Against the Colts it was a different story. Vick was 17/29 for 218 yards and 1 PaTD (with 74 yds rushing, 1 RuTD). Good by any standard, but the Colts could not run the football. Washington is also 31st against the pass with a 286 yd/avg/gm and 18 PaTDs allowed. To put it in perspective, it's like soft flesh vs. a Katana blade.

- The Giants will not be so easy. They come ready to run and pass (5th ranked rushing offense and 6th ranked passing offense), while the Eagles are 12th against the run and 16th against the pass respectively. After just receiving a wake-up call courtesy of the Cowboys, the G-Men can nigh afford to lose another division game. So they will be ready for war.

- Eagles will keep a slight advantage due to Vick's hot hand, and the fact that they're playing at home. But make no mistake, on Sunday we'll find how good the Eagles really are. Personally, I don't think they're an elite team yet. Don't be surprised if the Giants steal this one on the road with the help of some untimely turnovers.

Dead Man Walking

Marvin Lewis. His Bengals are dysfunctional and constantly appear pissed at each other. Did you notice that Palmer, Ocho, and Terrell weren't speaking to each other by the end of Sunday's game against the Colts? This team won their division last year, and was only supposed to get better. Instead, they won't even make the playoffs. Expect a new coach at the helm in 2011.

He's got legs...and he knows how to use them

Felix Jones takes a dump pass from Jon Kitna and takes it 71 yards for a House Call. But did you notice the convoy of Cowboys running with him? Did you notice who was in the lead and appeared every bit as fast as Felix? Yup, Roy Williams. He could have jogged it out and let Felix fend for himself , but instead he ran the length of the field and blocked all the way. Credit where it's due.

Interesting point...

....and I can't remember who raised it (Armando perhaps?). What the hell is going on with this Brett Favre and Jenn Sterger thing? Brett has admitted to the harassment, and Jenn has met with the NFL and provided 'materials'. Yet no one is talking about it. At all. Now if it had been say Terrell Owens, Commissioner Goodell would have already suspended him for 6-8 games. Maybe more. Do we have a double-standard in the NFL? Are they trying to protect a future hall of famer in his last season? Both?

Confusing wasn't it? How could Shanahan bench McNabb one week, and then the next he's getting an $88M contract with $40M guaranteed? Was there a war going on behind the scenes between Coach Shanahan and the Redskin's owner Daniel Snyder? Was this Snyder's way of putting his stake in the ground in support of McNabb? After all, what did they bring him over for? Was Shanahan a shell of his former self, now bowing down to an overbearing owner (see Wade Philips and Jerry Jones).

But alas, like me, you thought something was rotten in Denmark. This couldn't be...not the Shanahan we knew. No way Jose. Well, the real details of McNabb's contract have come out, courtesy of Adam Schefter (is he not the most connected guy you know?), and the Redskins have made it virtually impossible for McNabb to earn all of that cash. No wonder Shanahan wasn't panicking. No wonder when asked, all he said to the media was "that's football...the highest highs, and the lowest lows. It [giving McNabb a new deal] makes a big statement about what we think we can do in the second part of the season". Smart guy. Cause all that's really happened is he's shut up the media, at least for now, and given McNabb a meager carrot to chase for the last 8 weeks. The 'Skins will determine in the off-season whether McNabb returns depending on the available QBs, and what they can find in the draft.

- Boy was Tom Brady ticked Sunday night when his team failed to convert a 3rd down. That guy went up a notch in my book. He went OFF on his team. Everyone. No holds barred. I was wincing at home. Man, what a verbal beat-down! Would you have seen that from my man Romo? I hate to say it, but no way. There's a lot of QBs that could learn from that.

TROY

Anyone paying attention to Troy Smith's reemergence in San Francisco? In two games he's thrown for 500+ yds with 2 Touches, no pics, and one RuTD. Not bad...and I think he'll only get better. Watch him in the pocket, he's got a quick 7 step drop, and is very mobile. He takes maybe a second too long to go through his progressions, but I think he'll only get better in that area. He throws a tight spiral, is not afraid to go downfield, and spreads the ball around. I like what I see.

The Niners have 7 games left with 4 of them against division opponents (Arizona x2, St. Louis, and Seattle). So believe it or not, they still have a chance to win that division. Could be enough to save Singletary's job if they do. Nah, even Troy Smith isn't that good.

Touch Football update:

- The Bear Obsessions showed character in a win last night against the Gunners. Down 0-13, they roared back and won 29-15. The revenge the Gunners were seeking will have to wait. Nice win.

- The Canes came out hard and fast against the Mudrunners and never looked back. Up 34-8 to start the 3rd quarter, they cruised to a 50-30 final. Next up, a showdown with BRICK. The two teams were responsible for each other's lone loss on the season. So it should be a classic. Buckle up!

How many times have you been asked to take on more at work without an increase to your salary? That apparently doesn't hold true for Chad Pennington. Now that he's been named the starter, Chad's salary has gone from $2.5M this year to $5.75M. Why? He had it in his contract. You can bet once this gets out, his agent will be fielding a lot of calls from players looking to hire him. Perhaps he can do the same for you? Of course! Asked what the Anne Frank reference meant, Crowder said, "Who was that? Is that the blind girl? Helen Keller...I don't know who the f*** Anne Frank is. I'm mad right now. F*** it. I'm not as swift as I usually am."

Fantasy Football Update

D&G League: I keep hearing how in no way did it make sense for ABT to start Fitzpatrick against the Ravens (Week 7) . That he lucked out. But was it crazy? Or did he just do his research?

- In the 3 previous games, against the Pats, Jets, and Jags, Fitzpatrick was a combined 52/85, 595 yards, 7 TDs, and 2 ints.

- Over that same time span, the Baltimore passing D had given up 62 completions (103 attempts), 747 yards, and 3 Touches (3 ints).

- ABT can speak for himself, but you gotta figure if Fitzpatrick can come in and complete 60% of his passes and net an average of 250 yds and 2 TDs, it would be great opportunity to sit Henne (ABT's other active QB) who had a tough match-up vs. Pittsburgh.

- And to further prove the point, Matt Ryan, a good but not prolific passer, cranked out 32/50, with 316 yards and 3 Touches last night. The Baltimore passing D ain't "who we thought they were...if you wanna crown them, then...."

TonyNFL League: Goose/Nick get a decent start to the weekend with 35 points from Flacco. But, it would have been an even better start if they didn't leave Roddy White on the bench. Ouch. See the previous article on the Raven's passing D.

Everyone's focus needs to be on stopping Gabe and Rick. If the gap isn't closed over the next 3 weeks, it'll be "forever hold your peace". These wily vets are showing the rest of us how to make the most out of a roster. Are you going to let them give you the stiff arm?

Touch Football Update:

- The Bear Obsessions notched up another win against a younger, faster team Wednesday night. The D was a wall and the offense was productive enough to bring it home 20-7. I guess the old guys are no longer a secret. The next game against the Gunners should prove more challenging as they're playing well this season and will be looking to avenge a bad loss to the Obsessions a few seasons back.

- The Canes went at 50% and even flipped the O and D rosters last Saturday, and still netted a tie ( 26 apiece) against the Mudrunners in a meaningless game. However, those same teams will hook up for real this Saturday in a playoff game. The winner advances to the Championship. Will be fun, but won't be easy by any stretch. You think the Mudrunners weren't going half-speed as well?

At a Loss with Moss

Moss put on Ice in Minnesota

Acquired from the Patriots for a 3rd Round pick, the Vikings have waived Randy Moss after 3 games. I believe the Vikings are now on the hook for the remainder of Randy's 2010 salary ($3M+), and what did they get in return? 13 receptions, 174 yards, and 2 TDs. Nice.

Why make the move? It just doesn't seem to make sense.

- Are the Vikings upset over what Moss had to say during the Week 8 post-game interviews? Sure he implied strongly that he feels the Patriots are a better organization and that he's regretful of the move; however, it seems to me that at most the reaction should have been a chew out session, and a fine. Nothing more.

- Is this Brad Childress' attempt to regain control of the team? If that's the case, then Brett Favre should have been waived and not Moss. During the post-game, Childress was asked directly does he regret acquiring Randy Moss. His answer? "Not at present I don't...no". He said Moss' comments simply showed a fondness for a team he'd played for the last 3+ years. So how does it make sense that the next day we hear that Moss has been waived, and that Childress did so without consulting Owner Zygi Wilf and President Mark Wilf?

- Many players/coaches (Chris Gamble, Tom Walsh, Chris Harris, and Darelle Revis of note) have said that Moss doesn't always give 100% and often gives up on routes. Do I believe it? Sure. I've seen it. But if you're the Vikings you knew this already. It's something you considered before bringing him over. [In the words of Sterling Sharpe "When people show you who they are, believe them the first time...the Minnesota Vikings got fooled twice"]. The Vikings were looking for a martyr, when the sacrifice should have been Brett Favre. Did you hear Childress' explanation for letting Moss go? He said that he was a "programmatic non-fit". A what? Is that what you told the remaining players? Is that what you told the owners?

- Brett Favre: You had a lacerated jaw man! Why were you curled up in the fetal position? To me it looked like a man trying to garner sympathy as the ultimate warrior. A man trying to distract his detractors...and Moss paid the bill.

- Better for Moss, he landed with a good organization with a well respected, tenured, coach in Jeff Fisher who knows the x's and o's. He may only be a fill-in for an injured Kenny Britt. But he'll do for now. And Jeff will evaluate the situation and make a fair decision on whether he'll be a Titan next year.

McNabb benched for Rex Grossman?

Are you kidding me?

McNabb doesn't know the 2-min drill? McNabb is not in good enough shape to run the 2-min drill? (Excuse me? McNabb had a 36 yard run in the 2nd Q)

WOW. What a huge insult. Sure McNabb handled it well in front of the media, but make no mistake. This was not a vote of confidence...not game strategy. This is Mike Shanahan sending a big time message to McNabb and the rest of his team. I'm just not sure what the message was, other than to say, I'm not 100% satisfied. But aren't there other ways of telling him that? Like say, directly?

By now you know that the Shanahan's also brought in both Jamarcus Russell and JP Losman for a look-see on Tuesday. Did you know that Russell weighed in at 286 pds? Do you know what his playing weight with the Raiders was (when the entire NFL said he was overweight)? 265 pds. Nice. Look, I think that Mike Shanahan is now coming to understand why the Eagles were fine with letting McNabb go to a division rival. But don't tell me he isn't slightly embarrassed by the last few days' chain of events.

Henne destined for the HOF?

I've been hearing from Fin Fans that Chad Henne will be a future HOFer. So let's compare his 2009 (13 games started) and 2010 numbers (7 games thus far) to Joe Montana's 1980 (7 games started) and 1981 numbers (16 games):

1980 Montana- 176/273, 1795 yds, 64.5 comp%, 15 TDs, 9 Ints, 3.3 Int %

2009 Henne- 274/451, 2878 yds, 60.8 comp%, 12 TDs, 15 Ints, 3.1 Int%

1981 Montana- 311/488, 3565 yds, 63.7 comp%, 19 TDs, 12 Ints, 2.5 Int%

2010 Henne (7 games)- 154/243, 1669 yds, 63.4 comp%, 8 TDs, 7 Ints, 3.1 Int%

*In his 2nd year as a starter for the Dolphins, Henne's numbers look good when compared to Montana's 2nd starting year. However, it is definitely way too early to declare him a future HOFer. Let's wait and see Fin Fans.

C.J. Spiller is the man!

Well not exactly, let's revisit what I'd said about him back in April 2010:

"I personally didn't think he was the best back taken in Round One. In fact, I didn't even think he was the next best Back. I had both Ryan Mathews and Jahvid Best ahead of him. Why? The combine results were fairly even amongst the three, so for me it all boiled down to the game film. Ryan Mathews seemed quicker to the hole, showed better instincts in the field, and seemed harder to tackle than Spiller (although Spiller did seem like the better receiver out of the backfield). While Jahvid Best looks like he's going to be a devestating 3rd down Back. Give him half an inch too much and it's over- watch the film and you'll see what I'm saying".

The only thing I was wrong about was Jahvid Best being a 3rd down Back. He's a full-time back, and once he puts on some muscle and builds up his stamina and durability, he'll blow people away with how good he is. Take it to the bank.

Touch Football Update:

- Canes go to 7-1-1 with a 33-30 comeback win over the Twin Hawks. They game-planned to beat us with crossing routes and double slant patterns but were more lucky than good. We adjusted in time to stop their final drive and seal the win.

- Bear Obessessions take down the Wildcats to move to 1-1 on the young indoor season. Much better effort all around on both sides of the ball. The wildcats were left wondering how they could have lost to a bunch of out of shape Italianos. Wonder no more Wildcats. Wonder no more.

- TV: The Tudors (CBC, Tues 9pm)- The multiple Emmy Award-winning 16th-century prime-time soap is back for its fourth and final season, chronicling Henry VIII's turbulent last days as king. Starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers. If you're into English History, this will not disappoint.

1. Week 7 had to be one of the craziest weeks that I've seen in a long time man. The following are just a few of the highlights:

- Kenny Britt, 225 yards, 3 TDs.

- Dez Bryant, Punt Ret TD, 2 rec TDs.

- NY Giants WR core: 21 recs, 249 yds, 4 TDs.

- DeAngelo Hall, 7 tackles, 4 pics, including a 92 yard pic 6 (and he's highly overrated...teams throw at Hall on purpose...geesh, Cutler made him look like the next coming of Deion Sanders).

- Ryan Fitzpatrick, 29 completions, 374 yards, 4 Touches. Stevie Johnson 8 rec, 158 yards, 1 Touch (Dal Bo was right about this kid). Lee Evans, 6 rec, 105 yards, 3 Touches. The Buffalo O deserves more credit...how could the D let the Ravens back into the game? Ouch.

- David Bowens (Inside LB, Cleveland Browns): 1 tackle, 2 pics, both for Touchdowns. Nice

- Raheem Morris called his Bucs, "the best team in the NFC". Look now, I know you're excited about your thrilling win over the Rams (in which you scored 4 FGs and a TD), but let's not get carried away.

- Carson Palmer, 412 yds, 3 Touches (just when I decide to bench him)

- Bengals WR core, 25 recs, 327 yds, 3 Touches.

- Roddy White, 11 rec, 200 yds, 2 Touches.

- Darren McFadden, 16 carries, 165 yds, 3 Touches. 1 rec TD.

- Favre admits to sending text messages but not lewd photos to Jenn Sterger. C'mon dude...

- Romo out 6-8 weeks with a broken clavicle. Cowboys dreams die hard.

2. Touch Football update:

- Bear Obsessions drop their first game to the Goodfellas, 24-8. In the process losing new player Anthony Veres to a torn achilles. After healing and rehab, Tony is looking to rejoin the team sometime next year.

- Toronto Hurricanes go to 6-1-1, with a 38-28 win over the Savages. Two games left in the season and then the playoffs await.

Although Gronkowski missed the block on NYG's LB Michael Boley, the injury could still have been avoided if Romo's arm was not pinned to his side. Now he's out 6-8 weeks with Kitna at the helm for the upcoming Jags, Packers, Giants, Lions, and Saints. Nice.

Thought I'd lead with a quote that could be attributed to any number of high-profile athletes in the big 4- Black OR White. Fact is, when you're young and makin' a ton, surrounded by beautiful women, the fancy things in life, and all your peers are rolling this way, it is very hard to be different. It takes a man of deep convictions to avoid, and even then it can be very difficult. Now there are extremes, such as making it rain with $40,ooo at a strip club, running over a guy on his way home from work, and beating your girl to within an inch of her life for example. But most professional athletes don't take it that far. But if that were you, at that age, with all of that in front of you, can you honestly say you'd behave any different? Sure, you say. It comes down to how you were raised, how you've been educated you say...your moral value system you say. Yes. Not condoning anything here, but there is a difference between guys who like to step out and have a good time, and numbnuts who are downright dangerous with that kind of power in their hands. Know the difference. Some of the guys that you're shaking your head at, like a disapproving parent, are getting a bad rap.

On to business....

1. First things first. Last time I was here I guaranteed a Cowboys victory over the Texans. I received a lot of emails ranging from polite disagreement, to laughing me off the planet. Funny, didn't hear anything after the game. But perhaps y'all were waiting to see how they'd do against the Titans? Well it was pathetic indeed. Down 3-17, they showed a bit of resolve knotting things up at 17. But then went on to screw up several opportunities to take the lead and win the game. At 1-3, things are very bad in Dallas. Jerry Jones hasn't said it yet, but believe me, jobs are definitely on the line now.

By the way, can anybody tell me why the Boys haven't gone to the Patriots to try and make a deal for Pro-Bowl offensive lineman Logan Mankins? Perhaps a straight-up trade for Tashard Choice (+ a late round pick if necessary). The Pats could use some youth in their RB core, and it's obvious the Boys need help protecting Romo (Titans had 6 sacks) and keeping the running lanes open.

2. Randy Moss to the Vikings for a 3rd round pick: When you're 3-1, leading the division, and he's been part of one of the most explosive QB-WR combinations in history? The Patriots brass has, uh, brass balls.

On the surface this does not look like a wise move. If Moss is unhappy, pull him into the office and reinforce team values. If he's part of the future of your team, sit down with his agent and begin new contract negotiations. But the brass did neither of those things. Instead, they floated him out to a team that they knew to be desperate for a WR and cut the ties. WOW. Makes you think that rumours of separate blow-ups between Moss and Brady and Moss and Belichick are true. Otherwise you grin and bear it, tuck a few more wins under your belt and trade him before the deadline.

Monster value for the Vikings. So what if Moss takes plays off- they're probably running plays! This guy in his sleep is better WR than 90% of the league at his position. If Sidney Rice comes back healthy, the Vikes have to be considered instant Superbowl favourites. Could get ugly a la the Vikings of 98'. [But hold on now...Favre emotional in the locker room due to Dong-Gate being a distraction in the locker room? Hmmm...smells like guilt to me].

But what of the Patriots? Can they really make due with Welker, Tate, Edelmen, and Hernandez? Listen, I think they can still move the ball. But their offense, in the absence of a real running and deep vertical game, becomes really predictable. As good as Brady is, dinks and dunks won't take the Pats to another Superbowl.

As if on queue, word comes now that the Patriots have traded a 4th round pick to the Seahawks for Deion Branch. Should have known. Belichick is Bob Krafty, and nobody's fool. Wouldn't surprise me if they were successful in acquiring Vincent Jackson as well.

3. So Max Hall started for the Cardinals this week. You've gotta figure Leinhart is chuckling wherever he is. He shouldn't be though. He's still not starting. So what if Hall isn't that good yet? So what if Arizona won the ball game without scoring an offensive TD. Leinhart would have found a way for them to lose it for sure.

4. Key injuries for the Packers coming out of Week 5 include Aaron Rodgers, Jermichael Finley, Clay Matthews, and Nick Barnett. This team is good, but hasn't been blowing people away as expected. This will further test their character and signal whether they're truly ready to take the next step.

5. The immediate next step for the Packers happens to be the Dolphins on Sunday. Here's a team that has showed the potential but hasn't closed the deal over their last 2 games. I consulted a friend of mine who's a die-hard Fin fan and he demanded the firing of the Special Teams coach after the Patriots debacle. Guess what? It happened the next day. He also called Henne something unspeakable and said he hasn't got what it takes. Guess we'll see. In TonyNFL I have him as my QB #2 along with Brandon Marshall as my WR#1. I need them to deliver.

6. Fantasy Hindsight:

- Through 5 weeks Arian Foster is the #1 RB with 562 yds and 4 TDs...and I thought I was reaching when I grabbed him at the top of the 4th round. Not bad

- Hakeem Nicks has compiled 400+ yds and 6 TDs. I had both the intent and opportunity to grab him...but chickened out and took Steve Smith instead based his 2009 numbers. Now someone else is benefiting. Nice

- A lot of you stuck by Larry Fitz and drafted him in the 1st or 2nd round counting on both his ability, and the potential for a come-back year by Derek Anderson. The results? 300 yds and 2 TDs. In the company of such huge stars like Mark Clayton, Eddie Royal, Louis Murphy, Danny Amendola, Jabar Gaffney, and Roy Williams. You be the judge

- I took rookie Mike Williams as my 5th WR based on his performance in training camp, and projections to be the #1 WR, albeit on a bad team. So far the move has paid dividends as the kid has 238 yds and 3 Touches. Compare that to say a Wes Welker (217 yds and 3 Touches), or a Greg Jennings 183 yds and 3 Touches). Not bad

- Was thinking about taking Philip Rivers (1759 yds, 11 TDs, 4 pix) based on Strength of Schedule. But of course, I chickened out and took Matt Schaub (1233 yds, 7 TDs, 5 pix) based on his elite status and, of course, Andre Johnson. It may pan out. But right now Rivers is doing more with less.

- Speaking of doing more with less, take a look at Kyle Orton (1733 yds, 8 TDs, 3 pix).

7. Went out to run an errand for the wife, and of course, took longer than was required. Wife calls me and asks me where I am. Me being the smartass, I say "I went out to see the Gooma, heading back now". Without missing a beat the wife says "So soon? I knew you didn't last long but that's a new record". Nice.

8. Got around to seeing the movie 'Grown Ups' with Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Salma Hayek, Maria Bello, and Steve Buscemi. This is a very poor movie. Half-way through, I was wondering 'What the hell am I doing here?' Do not see this movie.

1. Reid makes the prudent move and names Vick the Eagles' starter for the foreseeable future. Who dares disputes this besides PETA? Vick has been playing at a high level and Kolb is unproven. Makes sense to me.

2. The Dallas Cowboys are 0-2. Fortunately for them, they've been 0-2 before and have gone on to win the Superbowl. Unfortunately for them, barring an incredible turnaround, I don't see it happening this year. Too much pressure with the Bowl game being played in their own backyard. Talented yes, but since when have you known Wade to field a mentally tough team? I know it's very early, but if the Boys go into their bye week at 0-3, the Cowher watch will be on. But it won't come to that. I personally guarantee a Cowboys victory. It'll be tough sledding. But they'll win.

3. Think I'm crazy do you? Hmmm. I seem to recall being laughed at when I guaranteed the Boys would beat the undefeated Saints on the road last year. The Boys will win and here's why:

- Boys will pound the ball. They've shown they can run in spurts, but they'll need a firm commitment in Week 3. Yes the Texans' run D has been staunch thus far, but how will they fare against the Cowboys big O-line? They'd had challenges protecting Romo, but they can and will open up the running lanes on Sunday.

- Houston is last in the league against the pass. If the boys can run successfully and keep the Texans honest, they'll get the right match-ups in the 2ndry. Picture this, Felix lined up in a single back set, Miles, Bryant, and Williams with Witten running underneath. Whom do you cover? Especially when Felix runs out into the flat? OR put a WR in motion and block down on a LB. The Boys will be able to run or pass out of that set and the Houston D will never know what's comin'.

- Look, the Texans will score when they have the ball. But if the Boys can play ball control, and protect the football, they'll win the ballgame. Put it in 3-INCH BOLD LETTERS

4. Someone explain to me why Thomas Jones is now the starter over Jamaal Charles. Somebody? Anybody?

So the hapless Bills [until proven otherwise] decided to start C.J. Spiller in week 1 and gained 6 total yards for their troubles. What did the blog say on April 28th?

"I personally didn't think he [Spiller] was the best back taken in Round One. In fact, I didn't even think he was the next best Back. I had both Ryan Mathews and Jahvid Best ahead of him. Why? The combine results were fairly even amongst the three, so for me it all boiled down to the game film. Ryan Mathews seemed quicker to the hole, showed better instincts in the field, and seemed harder to tackle than Spiller (although Spiller did seem like the better receiver out of the backfield). 1. Don Banks on Big Ben: "Can I just go on record and say I don't believe the Steelers were seriously considering a trade of the the suspended Ben Roethlisberger?Were they trying to make him believe they were, to make sure that they absolutely had his undivided attention at this point? You bet. And threatening a trade to the Raiders is the best way possible known to man to do that. Message sent, and I'm assuming message received". Here Here...I was in disbelief when Dal Bo told me that he'd heard the rumour...that would have been a terrible move for the Steelers if they'd followed through.

2. Quote from Peter King: "I'm a little skeptical of C.J. Spiller's ability to lug the rock 300x a year, because he never did it for Clemson..." Word from Jason La Canfora regarding guaranteed contracts with no offset clause ( a la Pro Bowl Guard Alan Faneca): "...another prominent player released this season despite a massive guaranteed payment- Jake Delhomme, with nearly $14M guaranteed by the Panthers---also had a no offset clause in his contract, allowing him to make about $20M this season". Alright...for those who watched the Panthers' press conference announcing Delhomme's release- WHAT THE HECK WAS HE CRYING ABOUT?!

4. Like most people I thought Seattle made good moves in this year's draft. But I don't think Pete Carroll is a genius per se as the majority of those moves were prudent. These two players stand out for me: Earl Thomas and Golden Tate. You can expect these guys to make an immediate impact. Earl Thomas' ball-hawking skills remind me of Ed Reed. While Golden Tate plays like a Hines Ward/Steve Smith hybrid. I like him to catch 40-50 balls this year- maybe more.

5. Word is your boy Jarmarcus Russell is weighing in at 300 pounds (that's with a capital 3). Has anyone not told this guy that he's an inch away from being a total bust? If he gets cut by Oakland, he might not get another chance.

6. Was just thinking about my man Marion Barber (a.k.a. The Barbarian a.k.a. The Butcher from Barbersville). Is there anyway that he sees more carries than Felix Jones this year? The smart money says not a chance. He'll likely revert to his closer role in 2006 when he had 135 carries for 654 yards with 23 recepts for 196 yards. However, you can bet just like that year (14 TDs) he'll be a TD Beast at the goal-line. With that brutal schedule, the Boys will need all the help they can get so don't expect a trade here.

7. Yes you read it correctly- The Bills intend to keep both Trent 'Captain Checkdown' Edwards, and Marshawn 'The Inch' Lynch. Figured they'd keep Edwards after waiting to draft Levi Brown late. But they didn't do him any favours by not resigning T.O. As for Marshawn, why not package him up and trade down in the 4th round to grab WR Mike Williams? Marshawn's value is worth little or nothing now. He can probably be had for a cup of coffee and a "thank you very much...I hope we have better luck with him than you did". The other side of that coin says you keep him around as he gives you a serviceable back-up, and injury protection. Guess we'll see.

1. Alright, many of you know already that if you looked really really closely, you could spot Captain America's shield in Tony Stark's lab during one scene ("ok let's face it, you've caught me in worse position than this"- T.S.). Apparently in Iron Man 2, they'll be more suprises intended to set up the bond between the two characters. [Also, in one of the deleted scenes of The Incredible Hulk, if you look really really closely, you can spot Captain America's frozen body being loosed by Bruce Banner's alter-ego (quite by accident)]. Marvel is setting things up quite nicely. Why can't D.C. get their act together?

2. Tiger Woods will make his return to Golf at the upcoming Masters Tournament. A word from Mike Walker, Senior Editor, Golf Magazine:

“As a four-time champion, Tiger Woods has every right to resume his career at the Masters this April, but I wish he wouldn't... what's going to happen to the Masters when the Tiger circus comes to town? Get ready for souped-up security lines, paparazzi stakeouts at all entrances to the club (the Washington Road Starbucks is going to love this), and the ultimate "Where's Waldo?" as everybody tries to figure out where Woods is staying...”

Mike Walker might be right. A less auspicious return might have been wise. But like I said before, Tiger isn’t the only professional golfer with skeletons in the closet. Leave the guy alone. Personally I hope he opens up a can of ‘whoop-ass’ on the field and claims another Master’s Championship.

3. According to the Associated Press, Ben Roethlisberger (QB, Pittsburgh Steelers) “has yet to meet with Georgia authorities who are investigating a sexual assault allegation made against him by a 20-year-old college student”. Don’t think racial issues persist in this day and age? The alleged assault took place in Georgia. If the accused had been a big African American NFL player (Ben is 6’5” 240pds), he’d already be in Georgia State Prison serving a 20 year sentence. Believe that.

4. Was at a Ralph Lauren outlet store the other day...the cashier next to mine politely asked the customer she was serving (a young dude very interested in making sure that his pants sat below his buttocks), “...would you like to receive coupons by providing your email and address?”. The young man hesitated, then shrugged after completing what seemed like a mental check and then replied “alright...yeah...what do I gotta do?” To which the amused cashier (who had to look down at this point) replied “uh...provide your email and address”. Wow...where do you think education ranks on his totem pole?

5. Read an article in the NY Times about a group of men who were sexually abused as children by Priest Lawrence C. Murphy at a school for the deaf in Wisconsin.

“They used sign language, written affidavits and graphic gestures to show what exactly Father Murphy had done to them. But their reports fell on deaf ears of hearing people”.

Here’s the kicker, in 1996 Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (now known as Pope Benedict XVI) received letters about this case from an Archbishop in Milwaukee. The Vatican sat on the case until the priest died in 1998. It turns out that Father Murphy may have molested as many as 200 boys between 1950 and 1974. Even after he was first accused, he continued to lead youth retreats for another 24 years.

Listen, no man is perfect; therefore, it stands to reason that no church organization is perfect and not without sin in its proverbial ‘closet’. However, the number of cases of specifically Catholic priests abusing young boys is out of control...and has been for decades. At what point does the Vatican actually do something about this? Beyond of course a prayer read during Palm Sunday’s papal service asking God to help "the young and those who work to educate and protect them" (according to Vatican Radio, that statement was intended to “sum up the feelings of the church at this difficult time when it confronts the plague of paedophilia”). The plague? Try the Tsunami. To rub salt into the wound, the Pope got a little defensive on Palm Sunday as well in the face of a barrage of questions about his handling of sex abuse cases in the past. He said that faith in God leads one “towards the courage of not allowing oneself to be intimidated by the petty gossip of dominant opinion”. Wow...good come back. Try this one on for size:

1. Anyone interested in the new Captain America movie coming out in 2012? Here are some comments from the Director Joe Johnston [The Wolfman]:

2. Port-Au-Prince: As a result of the earthquake, some 4,000 criminals are still on the loose. Hard to understand what that must be like here in prosperous North America right? The 277 million dollar prison is an international model of sensory deprivation and isolation where half of the occupants are locked in their cells 23 hours a day. Now imagine if an earthquake hit and freed all of these men. The most hardened, violent men roaming your community would wake you up now wouldn’t it? If you haven’t done so already, give to Haiti and help their people and government recover.

4. Ok, so the Saints won...big deal. They outplayed the favoured Colts and brought new status to a city desperate for re-birth. Yada, yada, yada. I dunno...I’m a bit underwhelmed by the whole thing. I wasn’t leaping out of chair with joy (like when I thought the Cards were going to beat the Steelers last year). Yeah the Saints deserved it. But I re-watched the game only once and then promptly erased it from my PVR. Not interested...is it just me?

We keep hearing about McNabb to the Vikings...I dunno...not sure I can really see that. If McNabb goes there he’ll just ruin that team with his inconsistency. Hmmm....hope he goes there then. Dallas has a road game there next year.

8. I went to the Autoshow and checked out what’s to come. For me the two showstoppers were the new Audi R8 convertible, and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG . The Audi boasts an impressive 525hp with 390pds of torque. The Mercedes comes back with a V8 that produces 571hp and 479pds of torque. Both cars hit 0-100 km/h in < 4 seconds with a top speed of around 317 km/h. Nice.

9. I don’t know for certain, but I’m fairly confident that Shani Davis is the only brother competing in Vancouver. Naturally he won a gold medal in his event. That’s what brothers do. The Jamaican Bobsled team unfortunately failed to qualify. If they had, for sure they would’ve won gold as well. You know it...don’t pretend that you don’t.

10. Tiger Woods held his much-anticipated press conference today. Cameron Morfit had this to say in closing out his live blog of the event:

“The only thing we know is that Woods has been hiding under all that hubris some humility, which is somehow reassuring. I still don't understand the timing of the announcement, and the only thing I learned is that he might write off the entire 2010 season. That would be a shame for the fans, but for Woods, the golf has to come second. Good for him for somehow keeping it together emotionally, more or less, and good for him for being genuinely apologetic”.

Alright, now leave the boy alone please. There are at least 50 other dudes on the tour that have cheated on their wives...and probably 10 of them with Rachel Uchitel as well.

11. Huge Debate over who the best QB to ever play the game was/is. I look at it as best ever to play the position and not just win/loss stats as it’s a team game. Others focused on how they performed when it really counted i.e. playoff and Super Bowl appearances. Not everyone agreed with me, but here is my ranking:

1. Reggie Bush sucks. I told you. That guy is a bust-out! Now because I said that these will be his SB stats: 60 RuYds, 1 TD and 70 ReYds 1 TD. I hate that guy and so do you.

2. Peyton puts the 'Man' in Manning. That guy is a stud. For sure he carves up the Saints D. But the real question is will the Colts' D be able to slow down Drew Brees?

3. Nope. That's why we'll have a crazy shoot-out. Last team with the ball wins. But back to Peyton. I keep hearing people say that he can't be considered the best ever (Brady, Montana, Elway, Marino, etc.). But c'mon have you ever seen a field general of his caliber? Did those other guys necessarily make everyone around them better? (yes to Montana and Marino). Peyton has to be in the discussion of greatest ever to play the position. He's just too good.

4. Took in the Saints-Vikings game at the Brown Monster's (a.k.a. Brown Out, and one half of BrownFish). In attendance were Guido-316 (a.k.a the other half of BrownFish), Stanky Legg (winner of the 20th Anniv of TonyNFL), and the Patrone (a.k.a. one half of Patroose a.k.a Orange 'Patroose' Jones). Nice basement Brown-man! An elegantly appointed man-bar with deep woods and modern cupboards (tiled bar floor of course in case of spilled beverages [insert Guido can't hold his liquor comment here]). A wood floor complimented by dark wood shelving adorned with all manner of sports and jazz paraphernalia. It even came complete with a 'kids section' (no doubt a mandatory requirement from the wife). Great game, great company. And Patrone, Brown-man, Guido and Stanky are all right too.

1. Did anyone know that the great Cowboy DE Charles Haley (the only player in league history to own Five Super bowl rings) has a bipolar disorder? Haley’s on-field/off-field behaviour made for an interesting time at Valley Ranch during the Cowboy’s heyday in the early 90’s. Better now, he’s repaired his life and has things in order. Haley now wants to become a pass rush coach and feels he could show young players like DeMarcus Ware how to be even greater “"DeMarcus needs an inside move...he's just all outside speed. A pass rusher has three moves; inside, power rush and speed”. We congratulate Charles on his Hall of Fame nomination and wish him the best of luck.

2. Did you hear about this?
NEW YORK - A Bangladeshi taxi driver in New York City said he returned a lost purse containing more than $21,000 in cash and expensive jewelry because his mother always advised him to be honest.
Look, I know that we all love our mothers (right?), but would any of us give back $21K in found money? (Note that the jewelry was worth several thousand more on top of that). I’m still wrestling with this one.

3. Little known fact: When Sean Payton came to New Orleans and was looking for a quarterback, guess who his first choice was? Tony Romo. He offered Dallas a 2nd round pick for the then back-up knowing his potential from being his quarterbacks’ coach/offensive coordinator during his tenure with the Cowboys. If the deal had gone through Drew Brees would likely be a Dolphin today. I think Miami got the raw end of this one.

4. I’ve long been a big critic of Reggie Bush (wacker). I don’t feel he’s ever lived up to the hype of the big time player he was supposed to be coming into the league in 2006. Check out his career stats:

However, I will give credit where it’s due. He had himself a nice game against the Cardinals. But, let’s not forget that was against a team that gave up 90 points in two playoff games. Can he repeat a performance like that against the Vikings?

5. Don’t think so. The Vikings looked solid on both sides of the ball on Sunday. Think about it, they completely silenced the team that went into the Superdome and ended the Saints’ undefeated streak. At points the Cowboys looked inept against that Vikings pass rush. I expect a similar performance in the NFC Championship. Not saying the Vikings will win, but if Favre is in the zone, like he was against Dallas, they’ll be tough to beat.

6. The Bills hire Chan Gailey to be their next HC. I almost fell off my chair when I heard this one. I thought this guy was long dead man. And yes, I unfortunately do remember his tenure as the HC in Dallas- couldn’t wait for him to leave. But who knows, maybe he turns things around over there in Buffalo...stranger things have happened right?

7. Anyone still sounding off on the Colts for resting their starters over the final 2 games? Maybe a few, but that’ll all go away when they take down the upstart Jets and head to Miami for the Super bowl. This could be a great example of ‘Quality not Quantity’.

8. Anyone see that Hyundai commercial that they keep running during football games? The brunette sees the car and leaves a note with her lip imprint and phone# in the wiper blades. Then a blonde comes along and, with a sly smile, sticks the note in her purse and hops into the car. Geesh, where are we Europe? I know sex sells but this is getting ridiculous! Now lesbian sex fantasies sell cars?! Damn, I’m getting old man.

9. The D&G Playoff Pool is heating up as usual. Stanky has shaken a legg and taken over the top spot with The Cos right on his heels. But the target is still Obsessions a.k.a. Cologne Boy. He must be knocked out of the money. This guy is not going to collect two D&G cheques in one year if we can help it!

10. To the folks in Haiti...may God bless and keep you in this time of tribulation. D&G faithful, please give if you can. As difficult as things can get for us sometimes, we’re still better off than a lot of people in the world.

1. So the Seahawks have hired Pete Carroll to replace recently fired HC Jim Mora. His salary is even purported to be $32.5 over x number of years. But before making it official, the Seahawks, in order to comply with the Rooney rule, interviewed Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier. What a crock....such an insult. If you're not going to interview me as a serious candidate, don't interview me at all. This is what Roger Goodell had to say in their defense: "I can assure you they have complied with the rule with the information that I have. 2. One hell of a game between the Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers. Best playoff game I've ever seen. I know we expected a shoot-out but a 51-45 over-time game?! WOW! Incredible performances by both the young sharpshooter Aaron Rodgers and the ageless general Kurt Warner. I wonder how many guys in the D&G Playoffs selected Karlos Dansby as their defensive player? Hmmmm...

3. All year I've written very honestly about the Dallas Cowboys. I've let them have it when they've played poorly, and dished it out on upper management. But I always said I believed in the team (go back and check!). Although I somehow knew they would go into New Orleans and beat the Saints, I didn't have as much faith that they'd defeat both the Redskins and Eagles on their way to the division title. And yes, I wasn't high on our chances of beating the Eagles for the 3rd time this season with so much on the line. But wow, these guys are for real. Can they go into Minnesota and beat the Vikings? Sure they can. I think they can beat anybody right now. Anybody. But will they? Dunno. The Cowboy faithful will wait and see with bated breath.

4. Remember my Nov 3rd blog update on the Titans? I said the following: "Well now that Vince Young is at the helm, I think the Titans win all of their remaining games and go on to represent the AFC in the Superbowl where they’ll spank the life out of the Saints 41-14". I was joking of course. But Vince Young and co. went 8-2 over their last 10 games! Almost made me look bad there...heck, I still look bad on that one. Good for you Jeff Fisher.

5. Remember my Nov 16th blog update on coaches that need to be fired? "[These are the ]Coaches that need to be fired before you finish reading this sentence: Dick Jauron, and Eric Mangini. Coaches that can wait until the end of the season: Tom Cable and Jim Zorn. Coaches that need to be hired next season: Cowher, Holmgren, and Shanahan". Dick Jauron? Check. Mangini? Barely survives. Cable? Could be this week. Zorn? Check. Cowher? Would he go to Jacksonville if Del Rio left? Holmgren? Now running the show in Cleveland. Shanahan? Will try and lead the Redskins back to respectability. I didn’t do to badly now did I?

6. What is all the hubub in Philly about trading away McNabb? Yes I know he's inconsistent, but he's only been the best QB in the history of the Eagles franchise. I know Philly is a tough town but this is ridiculous!

Welcome to the Saturday Night Edition of 'Thursday Night Football'- and a special edition of RHINO SPIEL. This is a monster game for for both teams. For the Saints, the Cowboys are likely the last major hurdle to a perfect regular season with their remaining opponents being Tampa and Carolina. For Dallas, they must win at least 2 of their 3 remaining games in order to make the playoffs. Jobs are on the line and J.J. wants a winner (especially with the Super Bowl coming to town next year).

We're going to be following the game LIVE- round by round of this heavyweight fight. Nice!

Before we get going, let me remind you of a prediction I made on December 1st, 2009- right here on RHINO SPIEL:

"Right now it doesn’t look like the Saints can be taken down. But the next 3 contests will be at Washington (a top pass defense), at Atlanta (a scrappy bunch but less so without Turner and possibly Ryan), and back home to face Dallas. Of the 3, the Cowboys have the best hope of upsetting the Saints. Don’t laugh. Here’s why:

i. They have a top run offense. Better than anyone the Saints have faced all year. The Saints have had issues against good running teams this year (see Miami and St. Louis). If you can run you can keep the ball out of Brees’ hands. Miami had 4 rushing TDs against the Saints and dominated the 1st half of that game. When they faced the Rams, Steven Jackson had 131 yards and a TD. If I’m the Cowboys, I mix up my play calling to try and be as unpredictable on offense as possible. Modify the 2 TE set have Barber, Felix, and Choice on the field at the same time. Incorporate quick screens, and utilize the wildcat. Bring in 4 & 5 wide formations (Austin, Williams, Crayton, Hurd, Witten/Ogletree) to really challenge that defense. The Cowboys have more weapons than the Patriots.

ii. The Cowboys have a staunch run defense. Take the Saints RBs out of the equation right away. Blitz the hell out of Brees with DeMarcus, Ratliff, and Spencer. The Saints WRs are big and strong so the Boys will have to play nickel most of the time...take out Colston and Henderson. But you can’t stop everything. I like Shockey and Meacham to have a big day. But it’ll be worth the sacrifice.

I’m calling it right now- if the Cowboys can execute to perfection they will win the ballgame. As Coach Jimmy Johnson once said “Put it in 3-inch bold letters”.

Take note that both the Skins and Falcons gave the Saints a run (each game was a 3 point victory for the Saints). If the Cowboys play loose and to perfection I'm sticking to my pick.

Now enough of the pre-game chatter- LET'S GET TO IT!

FIRST HALF

-3 and out for the Saints

-Boys take over and run the ball..right thing to do. Will they take a shot?

-THEY TAKE A SHOT AND IT PAYS OFF! Miles Austin deep for a Touchdown! MILES AUSTIN IS THE BEAST OF THE NFC EAST! But let's not get too excited. The Saints have been down early before.

-Saints 2nd series: I'm curious as to why they're trying to establish the run against the Cowboys staunch D. NOT the right thing to do- play to your strengths- Brees is getting time in the pocket. Another 3 and out for the Saints.

-Patrick Crayton with a decent return. Cowboys come out running again...1st two carries go to the Barbarian. Big 3rd down coming up.

-Choice in motion...Romo hits Roy for a 15 yard gain. Any 3rd down conversion is huge for the Boys. Then a quick strike to Miles Austin for a gain of 26 yards. Why aren't the Saints giving Austin more respect?

-A run followed by a quick screen, followed by a direct snap to Choice. 1st and goal.

-Touchdown Marion Barber!! Cowboys up by 14! But let's not get crazy. THE SAINTS HAVE BEEN DOWN BEFORE.

-Saints 3rd series. They're pissed! Reggie for a big gain. But why are you running so much? Saints play-action...Anthony Spencer for a monster sack!! WOW...3rd and 20 coming up

-Saints go deep! Both players going for the ball...no flag...incomplete. Punt downed at the Cowboys 8.

- Cowboys going on a methodical drive but seeing more 3rd and longs than the first two series....this is due to the Saints clamping down on the run and mixing in some nice pressure packages.

-Cowboys going for it on 4th and 4. I do not agree with this call. You're defense is playing well, why take a chance on giving the Saints great field position? But the Cowboys get lucky on a phantom illegal contact call against the Saints. WOW

-The pressure finally gets to Romo however and the Cowboys have to punt. Saints will start from their 9 yard line.

-Saints now start to mix up the play calling...seems to be keeping Dallas a bit confused...moving the ball nicely now...you get the sense they're waiting for that one crack in the Cowboys armour to appear.

-They find it with a nice 34 yard pass play to Colston. Saints in the Redzone. Brees is getting a lot of time to find his receivers....non-existent pass rush by the Boys' right now. However the Cowboys' D tightens up and forces a Saints field goal. 14-3 Cowboys.

-Mid-way through the 2nd Q (7:14) and the Cowboys are deep in their own end....Felix for 17 yards...Felix then Barber and the Superdome crowd is quiet...Jonathan Vilma is all over the field making plays...Saints putting huge pressure on Romo...Cowboys forced to punt

-3:55 left in the 2nd Q...Saints start deep in their own end...despite some mild pressure Brees is getting the ball out...Bush goes out with a cramp...we'll see if he checks back in....Brees is finding his receivers and the Saints are moving down the field!!

- But check that...Brees underthrows a deep ball...Jenkins int...and the Cowboys have it back with 1:53 remaining in the 2nd.

-The Saints D seems to have made all the right adjustments and the Cowboys' passing attack has gone cold. Saints will get the ball back with plenty of time on the clock....not good for Dallas. But DeMarcus gets to Brees and it's a fumble...Cowboys recover!! Cowboys tack on 3 points and will get the ball back to begin the 3rd Q. Nice half but the bad news is there is still another half to play and the Saints are the most dangerous team in the league.

SECOND HALF

-Cowboys are moving the ball down the field with a beautiful mix of run and pass...say what you want about Jason Garrett, but he's called a nice game so far

-Barber to the corner...TOUCHDOWN COWBOYS!

-Saints take over down 24-3....I must stress to you that this is still the most dangerous team in the league...no lead is safe...Cowboys have to play to the very last second to win

-The Saints come out and spit in the face of a pending upset with a nice return by Roby...let's see if they can put points on the board (they need it)...Saints will start their 1st drive in the 3rd Q from the Cowboys' 36 yard line...

-OH!! Devery Henderson drops an easy TD...Anthony Spencer is on fire for the Cowboys....Saints are going backwards here...Saints to punt

-6:03 left in the 3rd Q...Cowboys take over....Austin cracks 1,000 yards receiving on the season...11 TDs so far...WOW...Cowboys move it to mid-field and will punt it back to the Saints.

-Saints take over with 0:38 leff in the 3rd Q...moving down the field with quick passes and max protection..finally getting the ball to his big WRs...the Saints are going no-huddle....TOUCHDOWN SAINTS (Mike Bell).

-Cowboys let a 40 yard return by Felix Jones go to waste and have to punt the ball away...oh oh

-Saints go on the attack and sprint down the field to score..TOUCHDOWN SAINTS (Lance Moore)...oh oh Cowboys...better watch out!

-But the Cowboys are playing too well on offense...Romo is converting on 3rd downs and Austin is abusing the Saints secondary...Dallas moving down the field seemingly at will...4 mins left in the 4th Q...Barber will a monster 1st down...3:55 left to play...Dallas on the 4 yard line...at TD will put the Saints to bed...Cowboys seem content to run and not take a shot at the endzone...but wait a minute..Nick Folk hits the cross bar! The FG is no good...you've got to be kidding me. Wow...Nick Folk may have just lost his job.

1. The D&G Playoff Pool returns 01.09.10. Don’t miss out! Public Enemy #1? Obsessions a.k.a. Cologne Boy.

2. I think the Eagles are hitting their stride at the right time. Good teams play their best football in December. They are now first in the NFC East and own the #3 seed in the NFC. All they have to do is hold their own against San Francisco and Denver (both home games) and it’s a virtual lock. Forget Dallas and forget the Giants (even though one of them might still make the playoffs). The other team to watch in the NFC is the Pack. This is a dangerous team flying low under the radar right now.

3. Both the Colts and the Saints are 13-0. First time two teams have been at 13-0 in the history of the NFL...and you know what? I find myself not really caring so much.

4. Here’s someone who may lose his job at the end of the year: Gary Kubiak. For all the weapons on this team, I feel they’ve actually taken a step backwards. Their reason for living should be to beat the Colts, yet their lifetime record against them is 1-13 (or something like that). Pathetic. It may be a stretch, but don’t be surprised.

1. I think Robert Meacham was awesome on Sunday. To me, he’s supplanted Steve Breaston as the best #3 WR in the league.

2. I’d be very afraid of the Packers right now. Their defense is ferocious, they’ve seemed to repair their O-line issues, and Aaron Rodgers is on a tear. You don’t want to face these guys wild-card weekend.

3. The Cowboys missed another great opportunity by losing to the Giants on Sunday. By my count that’s at least 3: The loss to the Giants week 1, the loss to the Broncos, and the loss to the Packers. By winning yesterday they could have effectively ended the Giant’s season, and put some fear into a Chargers team heading their way next week. As much as I love them, they’re not winners. And it goes back to what I said early in the year- that it starts at the top with the ownership and coaches. The team is laden with talent, but the attitude and culture is one of self-doubt and tentativeness- instead of the expectation of winning each and every Sunday (see the Saints). However, having said that, I say the Cowboys will put a drubbing on San Diego this Sunday.

4. I still think Anquan Boldin is a beast. Re-watch the SNF game film if you doubt me. He’s a MANANIMAL!

10 THINGS....

1. A word on Chris Collingsworth: I used to rif on this guy during his playing career. I found him to be an overrated receiver on the field (yes, even at 6’5”) and an annoying personality in real life (Don’t remember? Check it out here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8HdOEStmrs)
i. Yet his career stats: 1981-1988, 417 receptions, 6,698 yards, 36 TDs, four 1000 yard seasons
ii. Are on par with Plaxico Burress’ first seven years: 2000-2006, 400 receptions, 6,366 yards, 39 TDs, three 1000 yard seasons. Not too shabby
iii. And he’s won five Sports Emmy Awards.

He sounds less of goof than when he first started and clearly knows what he’s talking about. Still don’t love the guy, but he’s grown on me a little.

2. I was laughing at the Titans after they went winless in their first 6 starts. I sarcastically predicted that they’d go on to win 10 in a row and make the playoffs. Well....five games later and the joke may end up being on me. But the magic carpet ride ends next week in Indy.

3. Speaking of the Colts...down 0-17 and then outscore the Texans 35-10? Wow...that is sick.

4. I commented weeks ago that it may be time to reopen those ‘best QB ever’ discussions. Are you sure it’s Tom Brady? Manning and Favre would like to say a few words about that.

5. Tell me again that next year you’d still take Adrian Peterson over Chris Johnson. Really, I want to hear you say it. But before you do please take a gander at Chris’ 100+ yard rushing games so far this season:

6. Took the kids to see Planet 51. Really bad movie. It was everything I could do to keep my eyes open. Usually they make the character similar in appearance to the actor providing the voice. 7. Speaking of weak...this Thursday's NFL prime-time game featuring the Bills v. Jets is here in Toronto. Of course I’m going...but wishing the Bills were a lot better and a team like the Patriots or Saints were in town. Pay attention to the jersey count...they’ll be some Bills fans, some Jets fans, and whole lot of everything else. Toronto is a big NFL city with fans here supporting almost every team out there. I’m curious to know how the NFL feels about that. This is supposed to be the Bills’ market right?

1. The Hurricanes won their Touch Football Division Championship on Saturday with a come from behind 36-34 victory. The Canes went 13-0! Unstoppable...

2. Things that make you say ‘Hmmmm…’: Chris Chambers’ first 6 games with the Chargers netted 9 catches, 122 yards, 1 TD. His first 3 games with the Chiefs have netted 10 catches, 249 yards, 3 TDs. Guess he really didn’t want to play for San Diego eh?

3. If the Cowboys cannot muster up enough offence to beat the Raiders on Thanksgiving, you might as well call the season a wrap. Why? Check out the remaining opponents: Chargers, Giants, Saints, Redskins, and Eagles. Yeah…better beat the Raiders.

4. Tony NFL: I think things are getting really interesting in this league. We thought Johnny’s Groupies had things all wrapped up but GooseNick wants to have the last word. With only 62 points separating them, the final 6 weeks is going to be critical. Looks like it’s a 2-team race to the finish.

5. D&G League: I think ABT had the week he needed to stay in the hunt (imagine if he’d started Jamaal Charles). But at what cost? He may have lost yet another RB to injury.

1. If the season were to end here, Chris Johnson would be my #1 pick in the draft next year. He is the #1 back on the most run-heavy offense, anchored by the best O-line in the league. Besides that HE'S AN ANIMAL! Brees, Jones-Drew, Peterson, Turner all play 2nd fiddle to this guy. There. I said it. Sue me.

2. Coaches that need to be fired before you finish reading this sentence: Dick Jauron, and Eric Mangini. Coaches that can wait until the end of the season: Tom Cable and Jim Zorn. Coaches that need to be hired next season: Cowher, Holmgren, and Shannahan. Heck why not bring back Marty Schottenheimer? We need parity in this league.

3. Just when the Cowboys thought it was safe to go back in the water- BAM! Shark attack? Not quite. A ravenous Packers D combined with the sin of overconfidence.

6. D&G League: I think it's time to face facts- Obsessions has wrapped up the D&G title with yet another 160 pt week. The rest of us are playing for 2nd place- you know it and I know it (curse the heckler). The interesting by-line here will be if Patroose can stay in the money. Doubt it.

7. TONYNFL: I think things have gotten a little more interesting with the leaders coming down to the rest of the pack. But the top 3 may be too well stocked for anyone to make a serious run against them. Anyone besides me wondering if there is some collusion going on there? A little too buddy buddy for my liking. Yeah I said it! What?!

8. I think everyone needs to get off Belichick's case. I might not have gone for it myself but c'mon...I'm conservative and he's got Brady, Moss, Welker and Watson on that team. You telling me he shouldn't have had faith they could get 2 yards? Get out of here!

**I went down to Philly last weekend to catch the Cowboys Eagles Sunday Night game. A few observations:

9. I think it was interesting that my name (Warren), usually considered rare, was one of the most recognizable (along with David) to the inspector when we were crossing the border: “Mauro, Massimo, Giuseppe, Tonino- what kind of names are these?” Hilarious! Guess those guys don't get out much.

1. I think Brett Favre outright owns the Packers. They fear him. He should just buy the team and get it over with.

2. I think Chris Johnson is a mananimal. Is it possible this guy supplants AP as the number one fantasy draft pick next year? Think I’m crazy? Right now he’s making the argument right alongside MJD.

3. I think that those who passed over MJD for Matt Forte in their fantasy draft may have slightly miscalculated:
-MJD- 640 RuYds, 116 carries, 5.5 avg., 10 TDs, 27 Rec, 161 ReYds
-Forte- 408 RuYds, 118 carries, 3.5 avg. 3 TDs, 24 Rec, 185 ReYds

4. I think Ted Gin Jr. saw his life flash before his eyes when he was disciplined by Bill Parcells. I think he responded in a big way.

5. I don’t think anyone knows what is going on with the New York Giants. I don’t think that anyone in Dallas, Philadelphia, or Washington cares.

6. I think this was a funny comment made on a Buffalo Sports station in reaction to Ryan Moats’ 126 RuYd, 3 TD day:
“I have no idea why anyone tries to run on the Bills. Everyone knows you can’t run on the Bills. Watching teams try and do it is like high comedy!”

7. I think that San Diego has to take a lot of responsibility for keeping Chris Chambers on their roster for as long as they did; AND for paying him that kind of money ($4.55M this year alone). In my opinion, the Chargers have no rights to the money they will save for releasing him now. It should be distributed to organizations that will feed starving children around the world (and the Chargers cannot claim it as a charitable donation). Pricks.

8. I think that in the D&G, with 9 weeks remaining, Cologne Boy may have an insurmountable lead. The Cos may want to pick up the latest edition of New and Resale Homes magazine.

9. I think in 2009 PARITY has been replaced by MEDIOCRITY in the NFL. Nineteen teams have a record of 4-3 or worse.

10. Well now that Vince Young is at the helm, I think the Titans win all of their remaining games and go on to represent the AFC in the SuperBowl where they’ll spank the life out of the Saints 41-14. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I’m so funny.

Ready for this week's list? Here goes...

I think Tony Romo made a lot of critics eat humble pie with a nice performance against the Falcons. Even though he had one turnover on a bonehead run an’ dive (slide QB, slide!), he still managed the game well overall and gave his WRs chances to make plays.

Despite breaking down in the 2nd half yesterday (they gave up 5 TDs and a FG), I’m still somewhat impressed by the Dolphins. They’re being very competitive with limited resources (who said Ricky Williams’ career was over)?

As I said last week, the Redskins are in a bad state. However, I didn’t give enough of the ‘credit’ to Jason Campbell. Watching that game Monday night, he is really no better than an average back-up. He makes really bad decisions out there and is very tentative in the pocket. The Todd Collins watch is on.

I think the Bears are wondering if anyone got the license plate of that orange and black striped truck that slammed into them on Sunday:

I think it’s a crime that DeSean Jackson gets as little touches as he does in that Eagle offense. That kid is magic.

I think that unless something changes quickly in TONYNFL, it’s only a three team race to the finish between GooseNick, RobNick, and Johnny’s Groupies.

In the D&G, I think Cologne Boy, a.k.a. The Heckler is taking no prisoners this year. And he may just have enough weapons within his RB and WR core to survive his QB issues.

Is anyone wondering what has happened to Armando this year? Last place in TONYNFL, second-last in the D&G- this guy used to be the one to beat. Ouch. Word is a quarrel with his buddy Guido has caused him to lose focus...admirable that neither of them has played it out in the media. However, I think that this reporter will get to the bottom of it yet!

The Tennessee Titans are in dire straits at 0-6. But don’t put it all on Jeff Fisher- his players quit playing half-way through the 2nd quarter. Do you realize that Kerry Collins and Vince Young combined went for 2/14 for -7 yards with 2 interceptions? All day. Somewhere along the way this team lost its heart.

I think Tom Brady looked like the Tom Brady of ’07- 380 PaYds with 6 TDs. What kills me is that the defense knows he only throws to Moss and Welker- and they still couldn’t stop them!

I think Jim Zorn should be fired (shocker!). Do you realize they’ve gone 2-4 against win less teams this season? Then Mr. Snyder I think you should sell the team and get out of Football. You’re embarrassing a storied franchise.

I think I’m scared of the New Orleans Saints. What a horse-whipping they put on the G-Men. WOW. Who's next?

I think Matt Schaub is a Fantasy STUD.

I think Buffalo saved their season today with a win over the Jets. It should make the return engagement in Toronto that much more interesting (yeah right).

The Bengals are for real. Although not a huge Fantasy play, Palmer has become a really good game manager. In each of the 5 games thus far, he's led multiple clock-eating drives that have ended in a score. If not for a fluke play against the Broncos, these guys would be 5-0.

The Bills are a bad team. They lost to the Browns 3-6. Check the Brown's QB Derek Anderson's stats from yesterday: 2 completions, 23 yards, 1 INT. Are you serious man? Never in my football watching life have I ever seen such ineptitude.

Miles Austin is a beast (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTUDvCiIDNk&feature=related)- and Tashard Choice may be the most complete Back on the Cowboys roster.

But the Cowboys are a bad team overall. The fact that they needed a 250 yard, 2 TD performance to win in OT (against the winless Chiefs!) should wave great big red flag at you.

Brett Favre has skills. If he leads the Vikings to a Superbowl Championship this year, I think we'll need to reopen the 'Best Ever' QB discussions.

Speaking of the Best Ever QB. I think Peyton Manning would also like to reopen that discussion (another Superbowl or not).

I think the Giants are being very smart with Eli's injury. They know that they go as he goes.

I'm not yet convinced that Turner the Burner is back. Circle back to me in 3 games.

I continue to be amazed that the Wildcat offense continues to work as well as it does. Nice win by the 'Fins.

I think that 2nd TD catch by Braylon Edwards was the best catch of Week 5. Nice throw by Sanchez, but to make that catch under duress, get the feet inbounds, and score a TD? Edwards is doing his best to dispel the 'hands of stone' reputation (and yes I know the refs overruled the call erasing the TD. But this writer thinks that it was indeed a TD). AND I think that TD catch by Miami's Ted Gin Jr. against Revis was a thing of beauty. Much harder for the WR to make that catch then it is for the QB to make that throw folks.

Anyone catch the Cowboys_Broncos game on Sunday? If you didn't you certainly know the outcome, because whether you love or hate the 'Boys, you always know whether they won or lost. Well they lost. This time the horse broke the rider. Thanks to Andrew McKenzie (The Hurricane) for providing this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZMvbrUN8Pc. Yes, Marshall gave Newman a yank which enabled him to break free, but Terrence had a shot at that ball- and no excuse for missing several chances to tackle him. But this latest loss isn't Newman's fault (Newman!- sorry couldn't resist). Neither is it Romo, Jessica, Wade, Garrett, or T.O.'s fault for that matter.

Folks were riffing on the Broncos all week saying they're not really 3-0 because they hadn't beaten a real team yet. On top of that, folks were just waiting for that Denver locker room to explode due to this summer's hi-jinx (Cutler, Marshall). But did you notice how once the season started, you could hear a pin drop in Denver? There was only one focus- Football.

Contrast that with Jerry's World over in Big-D. Football was #4 behind #1- Jerry's World, #2- The departure of T.O., and #3 Who Romo was dating/dumping. Now, one team is 4-0 and the other is 2-2. Draw your own conclusions.

Going into this game true Cowboy fans knew it was a trap game. The Cowboys had the better personnel, and just needed to settle down and they'd win without the pressure of prime-time in a brand new mega=stadium. The Broncos had only beaten Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Oakland. As it turns out the Bengals are competitive; but the other two could be beaten by the last place team in my 2-hand touch league right now (Okay, I'm exaggerating, but not by much).

What happened? Nothing. Just character. My good friend, filmmaker and Football connoisseur, Andrew Burrows-Trotman (ABT for short) always said that a team's true character always shines through. That is what defines them and they will win and lose accordingly.

As I've stated before, the Cowboys are talent laden and, on any given Sunday, can beat anybody. We seen them clunk their way through games and yet still give themselves a chance to win in the end. They are this close (putting my thumb and index finger about an inch apart)...but can't seem to close the gap. What is the problem? Characters instead of Character. Big difference.

One of the things that stands out in American Wild West lore is the Pony Express. In the very early 1860's it was a mail service that ran across the middle of the United States (Missouri to California). It relied on mounted riders instead of stagecoaches or trains to cross the country. The result was the ability to cover 3,200 Kms in 10 days. Far faster than anything else at the time. The lesson? Less is more. Focus on your reason for being, and do it well.

Team 2: Hasselbeck, Garrard, Pennington, Gore, McFadden, Hightower, L. White, Mewelde, M. Morris, A. Johnson, D-Jack, Welker, Coles, Henry, Britt, Carlson, Boss, Bironas, Kasay, T. Davis, Weddle, Packers, Dolphins.

Let's talk about Team 1 today...

All things considered I didn't think I'd drafted too badly (certainly better than recent years). But, in this league (TonyNFL 20th Anniversary Edition, 10 teams, Standard scoring), I am taking an absolute BEATING. Why? MISMANAGEMENT THAT'S WHY!

Week One I leave Romo on the bench (300+ PaYds, 3 PaTDs). Why? Cause I wasn't sure what TB was going to bring. Their passing def was 4th in the NFL last year and it was a home game. Plus I thought the Boys would focusing more on establishing their new running game- working out the kinks.

Week Two I leave both Gore (207 RuYds, 2 RuTDs) and A-John (149 ReYds, 1 TD) on the bench. Why? No excuses here. Should have started them both plain and simple. Smooth move exlax.

Week Three:
Against my better judgement (I was thinking of Washington or White instead) I start Gore against the Vikings thinking he's my stud- have to go with him- look what happened in Week Two-and guess what? The guy sprains his ankle and gives me diddly squat. No luck with Gore this year. Yes I have Coffee...but he's a Rook...a great preseason means nothing now. He's got to show and prove before he'll be worth anything.

I'd been wrestling with who to start between Wayne and Driver all week. I knew Driver would have a good game against STL but...I'm so far behind I decide to take my chances with the better player and start Wayne. Reggie delivers (126 ReYds, 1 TD), but A-John doesn't. Should have left him on the bench and started Driver and Wayne. Who knew?

Anyway, I've got Romo going tonight. Hopefully he gives me something to feel better about.

Cowboys 31, Giants 33

If you watched the game, you saw the Giants win with a last second field goal. But let me tell you something, that game was lost months ago.

Forget the story you read this morning that said that Romo is the real problem with the team and not T.O.

The problem lies within the character of the club- and that character is defined by its owner.

The focus last night should not have been on the Tower of Babel; instead it should have been focused on winning the game. Have you heard some of the player's comments? They said it feels more like entertainment complex on steroids than a football stadium. Think I'm off base? Did you know that 30,000 people bought tickets that didn't come with a seat? Did you know that the players are paraded in front of the fans as they enter the stadium? A fish bowl would be an upgrade. One whiff of the pomp and circumstance and I knew the Boys were in for a bad night.

And yet, the Cowboys could have won this game going away. The offensive and defensive lines dominated on both sides of the ball. The O-line's push and seperation allowed the Boys to rush for a total of 251 yards and 3 touchdowns. The defensive line, despite not getting any sacks, put significant pressure on Manning all night. So why did the Cowboys lose?

Four things:

The Secondary is soft. Newman, Jenkins, Scandrick , and Hamlin aren't getting it done. In 2 games, they've allowed 606 yards passing and 3 touchdowns. How bout them apples?

Romo has to take better care of the ball. Last night's pick 6 and deep ball pick were just brutal momentum killers.

The Dallas receiving core is weak. A very average crop at best. Not one of them strikes fear into the hearts of their opponents. Not one.

Character. All Show and no Prove. I don't feel this team is playing with a sense of urgency. Instead, they're playing with a sense of entitlement. Not as brash, but similar to last year's attitude and expectations. Instead of being out there, it lurks beneath the surface like an unseen cancer.

During the summer I predicted the Boys would go 10-6 and make the playoffs. They'd surprise people with a renewed sense of purpose and a retooled offense focused on the run. But you cannot change character. Yes they're a really good running team now. And yes I actually really believe in this team. But Jerry has to change its character and the smell of the air. Take the focus away from the stadium and put it back on football.

THE WORST POSSIBLE SCENARIO

As you know by now, the Eagles have signed Michael Vick. Yes, this has to be considered the worst possible scenario for the Cowboys and everyone else in the NFC East.

Why? It completely changes the way you
have to game plan against the Eagles. How will they use Vick?

Wildcat?

Two-Back sets?

As a wide receiver?

Punt returner?

Quarterback (with McNabb split out)?

If the Eagles can figure out a way to use him best (considering time away from the game, possible skill erosion, learning a new system, new coaching, circus-like atmosphere) weeks 7 through 17 and into the playoffs will be very very scary.

I applaud the Eagles for being ballsy enough to do this. They've effectively said that they want to win a Superbowl and Michael Vick has way too much talent to ignore.

Where it will get real interesting is if McNabb suffers a debilitating injury. Then what happens?

'The Worst Possible Scenario" is the Best Possible Scenario if you're part of the Eagles organization.

*More importantly how will Vick's presence in Philly impact Fantasy Football? Will he be in a position enough to rack up yards, PPR, and touchdowns?

Anyone as shocked as I am?

And I quote: "How can the $1.75 billion owners of the most valuable franchise in hockey continue to so mismanage one of the NHL's most storied teams? The Leafs still haven't won a Stanley Cup in 42 years, and the deep pockets of its parent organization have done little to reverse that trend. But it's not some fat-cat collective running the team from its penthouse suite -- since 1994, MLSE's primary investor has been the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan. Movie Review: X-Men Orgins- Wolverine

The long awaited Woverine pre-quel finally hit theatres. Here is my bullet-point review:

Why didn't the Director take more time to delve into the family dynamic? Someone uttering "my son" with bone claws in his gut doesn't exactly explain a lot of things.

Loved the show of 'brotherhood', fighting side by side, war after war. Always have each other's back. But did they have to say "back to back' all the time? After all these years you'd think they'd know it?

Where was Wolverine's berserker rage? He was too calm and collected most of the time.

Somehow I thought that bonding an indestructible metal to your bones would have been alot more painful. He seemed to handle it ok. Did anyone believe for a second he'd actually die? C'mon man. You have to better than that dude.

Cool claws. (ooooo shiny)

Liev Schreiber was very convincing as Sabretooth. This guy needs his own movie.

Ryan Reynolds was absolutely superb as Wade Wilson. As I knew he would be.

The Director screwed up the Deadpool character though. He was not a genepool of stolen mutant abilities. He was an assassin of the highest order coupled with a healing factor and 'deadpan' humour. He earned his name by surviving a prison stay where the inmates ran a deadpool on who would be the next to die.

The Professor X appearance was weak. Not even a hint of suspense. Corny if you ask me.
Very forgetable. Fit for TMN. Not the big screen

Let's talk Superhero Movies

Ranking the Top 10 Superhero Flicks-

Spiderman 1- Took the genre to the next level. Still the best. Although I'm still on the fence with Maguire, Willem Dafoe was the perfect casting as Norman Osborn/Green Goblin.

Dark Knight- Bale and Freeman deliver, but Scary clown puts it over the top. I believe in Harvey Dent!

Iron Man- This was really, really good. The Armour was wicked and Downey Jr. was very believeable as Stark. Ironmongers unite!

Superman: The Movie (1978)- Some have this at #1. Can't blame them, watch this film again and realize how good it still is today.

X-Men- A good intro. Well done all around...except Halle Berry as Storm. Sorry

Spiderman 2- Strong follow-up to Spiderman 1. Very well done...but to reveal his identity to a train full of people? Nah...

Batman Begins- Thank you for saving the franchise. Batman Forever and Batman & Robin were total embarrassments.

Batman (1989)- Competent. But Keaton is not Bruce Wayne. Kim Basinger is simply not believeable. But Nicholson was ok as was the film overall. Big upgrade over Adam West and Burt Ward. Ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?

Superman II (1980)- Epic battle with General Zod. Very cool to see.

The Incredible Hulk- Norton, Roth, and Hurt will the real stars of this one. I believed them as Banner, Blonsky, and Thunderbolt Ross. Although I understand the reason for the Stark/Avengers connection at the end of the film, it wasn't done well. The General is going to go drinking at a local bar and Tony Stark walks in? C'mon!

BULL TO BUFFALO

So I'm in my kitchen talking with my close friend ABT about life and how you never know what it's going to throw at you. It is then when I see the Breaking News on NFL Network, "Terrell Owens signs a 1 year deal with the Buffalo Bills". Did you say the Bills? Did I read that right? WOW. I have to admit that like Stevie Wonder, I did not see this one coming.

But let's break it down shall we?

Here are the reasons why I like it:

In one swift move, Ralph Wilson has brought back the fans. After a season to forget and the trepidation surrounding a possible future move to Toronto, Wilson has given the fans a reason to believe again.

The Bills immediately put the rest of the AFC East on notice. The Fins, the Patriots, and the Jets know that these guys are not content with being the dregs of the division. Remember at least for half a season last year, the Bills were in contention with the rest of them.

This says a lot about T.O., maybe he is the most misunderstood guy in the league. No one would have picked him to go to such a small market team. 'Owens' on the back of a Bills jersey? Still can't see it. Undoubtedly he could have gotten bigger money going elsewhere. And yes I heard about all the teams that came out and said "we have no interest in signing Terrell Owens". Don't believe that for a minute! Trust me, the Bills were the only team negotiating with Terrell's agent Drew Rosenhaus.

'Owens' on the back of a Bills jersey: Oh, make no mistake the printing presses are already running my friend. The Bills marketing staff will have T.O.'s jersey in the stores faster then it takes a guy to get to first base in a porno! NFL licensed jersey revenues are shared, so the real bonus is that these jerseys represent free advertising for the team. The more you have out there, the more you're attracting attention to the team itself. That in turn sells more seats which gives the Bills the opportunity to earn more unshared revenue like Box seat sales and $12 Hot Dogs.

Lee Evans and Marshawn Inch (Lynch! I meant Lynch...damn, I keep doing that) have just become a lot more valuable in Fantasy Ball. Grab them if you can.

Bills in Toronto: All of a sudden, Toronto fans will have 2 games to watch T.O. in 2009. Love him or hate him, now you've got a real stud playing for the home team.

Here are the reasons why I don't like the move:

Trent Edwards 2008 stats: 245 /374 for 2699 yards, 11 TDs, 10 Ints. Dude this is going to be no where good enough. Sure the very presence of T.O. will dramatically improve those numbers but I feel sorry for Edwards if he can't get T.O. the ball. Quotes from several games last year- "Edwards is not getting much help from his offensive line. The Buffalo running game has been anemic lately and when he tries to pass he doesn't have much time to find receivers downfield...Edwards is intelligent, young, and still learning, but based on recent games he seems to be regressing" (Week 10 vs. New England); "Edwards got off to a horrible start as he threw three interceptions in the first quarter as he went three for seven for 25 yards, and only led the offense to one first down. The Browns played a lot zone early in this game and Edwards tried to force the ball into some receivers he should not have" (Week 11 vs. Cleveland); "Edwards had a mediocre first half, hitting ten for 21 for 112 yards. Worse, he started bouncing passes to receivers again" (Week 13 vs. San Franciso).

The back-up is newly signed Ryan Fitzpatrick. He went 221/372 for 1905 yards, 8 TDs, and 9 Ints. Oh boy...this is not looking good. Here are some quotes from some of his games last year- "Fitzpatrick looked out of synch all day, looking uneasy in the pocket and being late on his reads. He threw three interceptions and lost a fumble, and seemed to try to force some throws in where coverage was tight" (Week 4 vs. Cleveland); "Fitzpatrick's yards per pass play were quite low (less than three yards) and much of his results were short passes over the middle or towards the sidelines. When he did drop back, he went down, to the tune of seven sacks" (Week 7 vs. Pittsburgh). Getting the message? THESE QUARTERBACKS ARE SHAKING IN THEIR BOOTS RIGHT NOW.

1 year, $6.5M? Only? Surely you could have done better than that sir. Although Terrell won't admit it, it sounds like Drew told him to take what he could get. Repair your image in a quiet town like Buffalo, and then move on to better things. But taking this now may preclude him from receiving another big contract down the road.

Marshawn Inch (Lynch! Lynch!): He is a borderline bust right now. Owens' arrival gives him a chance to be good again, but if he can't overcome his off the field problems, adding Terrell will do nothing to improve the declining morale of this team. I liken it to when Deion Sanders joined the 49ers secondary in the early 90's. He immediately made everybody around him better, but in the end he left the team worse than before he arrived. Why? Because the circus atmosphere that was Primetime's mantra (back then...he's a completely different man now) became the priority over football.

Bottom Line:

It's a surprising move that has some risk. But overall I think the reasons for doing it outweigh those for not doing it. Name one cornerback in the AFC East that can confidently cover Terrell Owens man-to-man? There isn't one. That immediately means defenses will have to play the Bills differently. If Trent can get better, and his o-line can give him the time he needs, we could see the Bills making a playoff appearance next year.

T.O. Be or Not T.O. Be- No longer a question

The Free Agency period began in earnest last week and has been humming along with it's usual share of big signings (Redskins guarantee Haynesworth $41M over the next 4 years), surprises (Browns trade Winslow to Tampa Bay, Eagles let Dawkins migrate to Denver, Dallas lets Canty go to the Division Rival Giants, and the Broncos entertain a 3-way trade that would have sent Cutler to Tampa, Cassel to Denver, with picks to New England), and sensible moves (Kitna to Dallas to back-up Romo).

Before Free Agency began there was much bally-hoo about whether Dallas would keep Owens or purge him from their roster. Articles were written about how there were differing opinions in the ranks of the Cowboys senior management, coaching staff, and player elite (Stephen Jones and Jason Garrett wanted him gone. Wade Philips was okay with him staying as were several players. And apparently Tony Romo and Jason Witten were on the fence). But then Mr. Jones came out and publicly inferred that Owens was staying put. Now that T.O. has been released, folks will accuse Mr. Jones of lying, but I don't think so. It is clear that he implied Owens would be staying; however, he did not explicably state that. And that would have been the time. So clearly there were ongoing discussions about Terrell's future in Dallas.

Many folks view Terrell as a cancer in the locker room who needed to go. His attitude (or at least the attention he attracted for every little peep) was a major contributor to the downfall of the Cowboys towards the end of last season. I for one disagree. For sure a model citizen he is not, but look at his time in Dallas vs. his tenure in San Francisco and Philadelphia, and he has been comparatively well behaved. I would offer that his on-field production can certainly be weighed favourably against his off-the-field antics. Check his stats over the last 3 years (2006, 2007, and 2008) in Big D:

- Played 47 of a possible 48 games

-235 receptions

-3587 yards

-38 Touchdowns

Let's compare that to arguably the best wide receiver in the game (Larry Fitzgerald) over the same period:

-Played 44 of a possible 48 games

-265 receptions

3786 yards

-28 Touchdowns

Oh, you say that Fitz isn't the best? Andre Johnson is the best? Try this on for size:

-41 of a possible 48 games

-278 receptions

-3573 yards

-21 Touchdowns

We could certainly compare others but I'd bet my Fantasy Ball Championships (D&G 2009-2010 and Tony NFL 2009-2010) that Terrell's stats over that period can be compared against any other top receiver in the league today.

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO Jason Garrett?

-Roy Williams replaces T.O. as the #1 WR

-For now, Patrick Cratyon moves up to #2 and either Sam Hurd or Miles Austin moves into the 3 spot.

-As none of those are legitimate #2s in my eyes, almost certainly Dallas will have to go after another wide-out over the next few weeks or hope to get a sleeper in the draft.

-Jason Witten becomes/remains Romo's #1 option

-Defenses can now put 8 men in the box to stop Barber. He's a Bull but will get bogged down in the increased traffic.

-This means that Dallas will have to shuttle in Felix Jones and Tashard Choice more often to spell Barber.

-But the running game can only take you so far, and Roy Williams isn't scaring anyone.

-Still loads of talent here, but the points won't come as easy.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO T.O.?

It means he'll get a 2-3 year contract somewhere else in 2009 for a dump truck full of $$. Possible suitors:

- Oakland Raiders: They love a deposed WR. See Randy Moss, Jerry Rice.

-Minnesota Vikings: They lost out on Housh. They'd love to team Owens with Bernard Berrian.

-Chicago: When your #1 WR is Devin Hester, you need all the help you can get.

-49ers: Could use the help in a bad way, but I don't see him as a Singletary guy.

-Bills: Owens won't go there.

-Jaguars: Maybe. I don't think Del Rio would shy away from getting Owens.

-San Diego: Not a bad fit. Vincent Jackson is not on his level and adding Owens could take them near the top of the AFC.

-Tennessee: Jeff Fisher could keep his ass in line...and could use a huge boost at WR. Don't rule this one out.

-Baltimore: Ozzie Newsome wanted him before, could T.O. change his mind about going there?

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO JERRY JONES?

Simply put: No more excuses.

WHO IS LEFT IN FREE AGENCY?

The following could be viable candidates for the Boys'

-Marvin Harrison

-Lance Moore

-Bobby Engram

-Mike Furrey

-DJ Hackett

Top Reasons for doing the unthinkable: Dropping a Touchdown Pass

Since 2003 I've been playing in a touch football league with a bunch of crazy Italian boys (yes I'm a glutton for punishment). We get together, have a good time, and don't take it too seriously. After all it's just a beer league right? Well, not quite. Yes, it's a beer league and sure we have fun, but not one of us hates to lose. Especially these guys. When we lose you hear every curse word in the book (and some new ones). The funniest thing is that after the game everyone pats each other on the back "good game man, see you next week". But then at the local watering hole "that guy sucks man, why do we have him on our f***ing team?" LOL! Hilarious!

As for me, generally I enjoy playing offense, but thrive on playing defense. I just don't like seeing anyone else succeed (that kind of characteristic makes for a good CB). Having said that, when I do play offense there is nothing worse than dropping a pass (especially when it's 4 for the field...you've got to score to stay in the game). Even worse I hate dropping touchdown passes. And what sucks is I've been dropping my share lately. Damn! It's gotten so bad that I actually have a list of excuses that you can borrow when you happen to drop one:

The lights! I lost it in the lights!

The ball was too low man! Do I look like Danny DeVito to you?

The pass was too high brother! Do I look like Yao Ming to you?

He knocked it out of my hands! Didn't you see that?

WTF JD?! Put a spin on that ball!

Damn gloves

Ref! That guy was all over me! That flag stuck to your ass?

Dichio! I was trying to tip it to you man...pay attention!

SUPERBOWL 43...

...was a whole lot of fun brother! Here's how Mr. Spiel saw it.

The 2 weeks leading up to the game found me really confident. I was backing the Cardinals and really felt they could win the game. In fact I really thought they would the game. You wanna know why? Because you cannot account for magic. The Cardinals had magic throughout the playoffs. Let's face it, everyone thought they would lose to the surging Falcons, a team that had really turned their season around behind Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, and Roddy White. But they won. Then they took down the Panthers on the road. And then they took care of business at home against the Eagles (and now one game them a chance in that game). MAGIC. So regardless of the Steeler's winning tradition and much vaunted defense, my predictions for the game were as follows:

Cardinals 22, Steelers 20.

Boldin would have a 50+ yard TD.

Warner would win the MVP and punch his ticket to the HOF.

I was almost right. Warner to a sprinting Fitzgerald for a 62 yard TD and I'm yelping "wooo! wooo! wooo!" My wife thinks I'm crazy. I am. I'm actually cheering a team I used to laugh at. The Cardinals are going to win this bad boy. But then the unthinkable happens (well not really the way the Steelers were moving the ball all night, but you wanted to think it was unthinkable. You wanted the Cardinals to win).

These were my thoughts after the game:

Roethlisberger and Holmes had ice water in their veins.

Good on Tomlin, he's now the model coach everyone wants.

I'm very happy for the Arizona Cardinals organization. It was a tall order and they almost pulled it off.

I'm very happy for Kurt Warner, even in losing he was very gracious. Would he consider an offer to compete for the starting job in Dallas?

Larry Fitzgerald is a very impressive young man. Young African-American men coming into the league should model themselves after him.

Hilarious! Just read an article today posted in CNNSI's Truth & Rumors>NFL (Fort Worth Star- Telegram). See below:

Newman: Coward Tearing the Cowboys Apart.
eep fissures remain amongst Dallas??? biggest names, personalities, and players with Wade Phillips basically intimating that he had to have a come-to-Jesus intervention with Jason Witten, T.O. and Tony Romo before Philly. Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman encapsulated all of this angst, somewhat unintentionally Monday, when talking about lack of accountability in this locker room. ???It is like the problem when you had the anonymous player saying all that stuff,??? he said. ???They are a coward, you know, and that kind of stuff ruined this season.??? Let that sink in: A bigtime Cowboy called another bigtime Cowboy, and Witten specifically -- if locker room rumblings about the identity of ???the snitch??? are to be believed -- a coward.

As you can see, anyone would have difficulty reading this. Typical reactions by readers went something like this:

Sunday Afternoon Football: Cowboys vs. Eagles for the last playoff spot in the NFC

So...I have to say a few things first before I get into my game commentary.

Number One: Anyone who knows football knew this was going to be a tall order for the Boys. They'd be competing in a loser-go-home death match with the hated Eagles on their turf. The first time around had been a slugfest in Dallas, and now it was a cold Sunday in the December, with a punishing wind and Ravenous fans (pun intended). I've been a loyal fan since 1979, so I've seen the good and bad times. This was setting up to be a bad time.

Number Two: I chose not to watch the game live. I was way too nervous to do that (a true fan would understand). Part of me felt "hey, if I don't watch the game maybe they won't disappoint me. And just maybe, they'll play a good game and when I turn it on later, it'll be a pleasant surprise".

Game Commentary:

I begin watching the game. The Eagles get first possession and are moving the ball well. I'm not worried. They always move the ball well. But I'm worried. The Eagles are generally not good on first and second down. Most times they put themselves in a 3rd and a few situation. When that happens, it's either McNabb making a great play with his legs or via a quick pass on the run- OR they fall short and have to punt. During the first drive Westbrook took a pass and fumbled it to Terence Newman. Nice. Who knew that would be the only Cowboy highlight for the entire first half? It's now 24-3 Eagles and Adam 'Titans are no fools' Jones takes the kick-off and makes like he's going to run it back for a TD (you know, like he's done once or twice this year...NOT). He fumbles and the Eagles have the ball on the Cowboy 30ish yard line with 5 seconds left. Eagles 27. Cowboys 3 at the half.

Second half begins. 3rd and inches for the Cowboys and Romo bounces one of the turf to T.O. The camera gets a close up and you can tell Owens is seething. Uh oh...Mt.Terrell volcano alert. This was the funniest part- Wade Philips (the coach who Jerry Jones swore by earlier this week) sends in the punt team and Romo sends them back. What? I thought that Wade was the coach. Guess we now know who wears the pants. 2 plays later Romo (the best sack evader in the league), tosses one to Witten who then tosses one downfield to Owens. 42 yard gain. Nice play. Maybe the Boys have a chance after all. A couple plays later Romo is stripped (it's in his contract to have at least one maybe two turnovers per game. That was the second one) and a Philly defender is running down the field and stiff arming Tashard Choice as he trots into the endzone. Eagles 34, Cowboys 3.

It must have been about now that I received a text message from one of my boys who is an Eagles fan (well he alternates between the Steelers and the Eagles, can't really make up his mind)- "Go Cowboys! Death at the hands of the Eagles". I ignore the message because he only has a mouth when things go his way. Otherwise he's a mouse. I didn't hear a peep from him after the Boy's victory in Week 2. Now he's talking? Geesh

Oh well, can't control that. Romo throws a 35 yard beauty down the side-line to Owens. Nice play. Where've you been my whole life? Next play Barber takes one in the flat and fumbles the ball as he's thrown out of bounds. An Eagle defender picks up the ball and takes it to the house. Eagles 41, Cowboys 3. I actually begin laughing in disbelief.

The NFL audio crew does a good job and zones in on Brian Dawkins "hallelujah" he says down on his knees pointing heavenwards. Apparently he's a Christian. God is smiling down on the Eagles.

On the next Cowboy possession (2nd and 10 from their own 30), Romo runs out of the pocket, pump-fakes, gets hit from behind and loses the ball yet again. Now I'm laughing hesterically (imagine how hard the Eagles fans are laughing). I love Tony Romo, he is one of the better quarter-backs in the league. But he's proven over and over that he cannot win the big game. He has a mental block. He just cannot do it. And that is exactly what he was thinking with his head in the dirt; both hands cupped over his helmet. Eagles 44, Cowboys 3.

Cowboys go 3 and out and then the Eagles take it the other way. Akers misses a field goal and the Boys keep the game within 41 points. Nice. Convert a 42 yard field goal. Maybe they have a shot. As a fan I'm not pissed at the players. I'm upset with the coaching staff (including Garrett) because they clearly did not have this team ready to win. The utter disdain and complete lack of self-confidence permeates the Cowboy sideline.

5:19 remaining and Wade sends in Bollinger, Crayton, Austin, and Bennett. Joe Buck comments on how low Romo looks and then Troy hits it on the head when he says that this loss isn't as painful as the next 6 months is going to be for Dallas.

So if you're Jerry Jones, what do you do know? Start a blog?

Sunday Night Football

So I'm beginning to think that the Cowboys were lucky to get a 20-8 win over the Giants last Sunday night. Why? Because the Giants clearly were not themselves without Brandon Jacobs in the line up. This guys beats up defensive players. Dudes are afraid to tackle him (he said it himself in a pre-game interview). Think about it, he softened up the Panther's D so much that Derrick Ward ran for over 200 yards!

Now don't get me wrong- I like Derrick Ward. He's a good athlete. He's a hard runner with a good mix of speed and power. But he's injury prone and in his best season (2007) he ran for 600 yards in 8 games with 3 TDs. Not studly numbers...but competent. But competent doesn't deliver 200 rushing yards in a single game. Did you see how soft those Panthers were in the last half of the 4th quarter and into OT? Cottony soft brother.

'Earth' is a good nickname for Brandon Jacobs, one of the best for a running back in a while. I've turned up my nose at him in past years (even though I did have him on one of my previous fantasy teams when Tiki was still playing), but won't any more. He's a low-end first rounder now and easily a top second rounder.

Yes the Giants lost 2 games in row and almost lost a 3rd last night (first drive of OT, an easy interception for Chris Gamble gets inadvertently batted down by his own teammate....would have put the Panthers on the Giant's 30 yard line). BUT, they've got home field advantage throughout, and possibly the cleanest path to the Superbowl of any team.

As a die-hard Cowboy fan for life (since '79 brother), I dislike the Giants. But I don't hate them. In fact I respect them (even though I laughed my ass off when the Ravens made them look like children in Superbowl XXXV).

Saturday Night Football

So I got up this morning with my kids at 7:15am...made them breakfast and set them up in front of some Saturday morning cartoons.

Then I ran around all day doing a variety of errands with and without my kids trailing behind me. All I kept thinking was "my reward at the end of the day will be Cowboys-Ravens". So now it's 11:10pm and I've just watched Willis Macgahee run in a 77 yard TD. What a way to close out an era at Texas Stadium. I became intrigued with this team as a 9 year old watching players like TE Doug Crosbie, WRs Tony Hill, Drew Pearson, and Butch Johnson; Ed-Too Tall- Jones, Randy White, and of course Tony Dorsett. Been through good times and the bad. Like most I thought we were on to something this year. But seems not to be so. This ship is going down fast.

Makes me wish I"d stuck to Saturday morning cartoons.
